It can take 10 hours for my daughters laptop to boot up. Once she starts it an hour glass stays on the screen that long. Besides running better virus software on it (it has pitiful Norton), what else can I do to fix this?

Get rid of alot of the programs starting up. Go to start>run>type in msconfig>then click startup, and get rid of the usless programs that are starting up on bootup, that is the easiest way to do it, and hopefully that fixes it. There are many reasons why that can happen, but lets just hope that the problem is to many programs trying to start.

Im hoping that the "10 hour" wasnt for real

it could be the hard drive as the user above me suggested, but I would also try scanning for spyware (that can take forever to load if you got enough of it), and maybe disabling some of the startup programs.
For the spyware try downloading spyware doctor as a part of google pack ( http://pack.google.com/intl/en/pack_installer.html?hl=en&gl=us )
and removing anything that it might find.
To disable the start up programs click on start> run and enter msconfig and enter. Then click on the startup tab and clear teh boxes next to anything that you don't need (keep anyhting from Windows/system32, adn your anti virus and spyware scanners and if you want something like a messenger

You ned to do some maintenance. Clear out your browser cache( found in internet options,) then defragment .your hard drive. defragging your registry would help if you have the software to do it with. Also, look in msconfig and see if there are any startup programs that you really don"t need.(BE CAREFUL THERE!)
