My fiance and I are moving to Long Island in July for his medical residency at Long Island Jewish/North Shore Hospital. We are from Michigan and Iowa and have no idea what areas to look for a house or apartment in. We want a clean, safe middle/upper class neighborhood close to the train/X-ways. Any ideas on nice areas would be greatly appreciated :)

Also, any thoughts on renting versus buying? We will be in NY for about 5 years and making decent income together. Thanks again!

I know there are some great little houses for decent prices in New Hyde Park im not sure if thats close to where you want to go. I know there is a train close to it, which is right off the Jerico turnpike and there are some great food places like Umberto's pizzaI my grandma used to live in that neighborhood and it is a really nice place and safe. would suggest to buy cuz the economy sucks rght now and u might make some good fortune one day

There are 15 hospitals in the North Shore LIJ system. We're assuming you'll be in Long Island Jewish Medical Center and the answers are good. I live in NHP and the average price of a house is in the $425k neighborhood. More and more houses are going up for sale so the prices should drop a little but the taxes won't. Those'll run you about 8k on average annually. ( check out this link to get a better idea bout houses, taxes, etc. http://www.mlslirealtor.com/unisearch.cfm ) It ain't cheap, that's for sure. and the typical lot size is about 60 x 100. LIJMC is just about slap on the Nassau/Queens border. In addition to the town mentioned (NHP, Floral Park, Great Neck, Lake Success and PW) you might want to check into some Queens neighborhoods. Bellerose, Glen Oaks, and Little Neck.
The renting vs. buying thing will be your preference as both will be pricey and who knows where the housing market is headed.
There are plenty of options for public transport around here as well. The Long Island Rail Road works fairly well (I take it every day) and the Queens buses are pretty good. Long Island Bus sucks though and parking at train stations is a royal pain in the butt. The area is not what it used to be, but it's still pretty darn good.
I hope this helps some.
Good luck!!
Feel free to send an email if you have more questions. I'd be happy to answer if I can.

Will he be in LIJ by New Hyde Park? If so, you can try checking out Floral Park, New Hyde Park and Lake Success--the first two are more affordable and more middle-class, whereas Lake Success might be a little more expensive. All three towns are accessible via parkways and trains and buses and are fairly close to NYC.

In addition, try checking out the Great Neck/Port Washington area. This area is more quaint, is close to the water and is situated in the North Shore of Long Island and is more upper middle-class. Again--easily accessible by parkway and the trains run through this area often (I take this line to work everyday).

As for renting vs. buying--both are expensive on Long Island, which is why many are moving out of the area. With the housing market the way it is now though, house prices have fallen a bit...but property taxes on LI are fairly high. If you are going to buy and since you don't seem like you plan on staying here forever, you can always look into buying a condo which would be perfect for a couple.

Good luck and congrats to your fiance!

the answer to that query is, it relies upon on what share associates you're sharing this abode with. Southampton, long island is an extremely costly area in spite of the shown fact that it is likewise very large. i think of you're getting a competent deal. basically understand that Southampton is a lot out East and in case you intend on traveling into NYC, you will maximum somewhat want a condo vehicle or positioned funds right into an prolonged island Rail street bypass.
