I cannot find a fuse that is blown. Headlights, emergency flashers and blinkers work as well as brake lights. I know those lights are the same bulbs as the marker and tail lights, so what gives? I need to get this fixed before this weekend because I am traveling for the hoidays.

I know that the lights won't come on until I turn on the switch. I have checked the fuses under the hood and checked all bulbs and all dual filament bulbs seem to be fine. I am thinking the switch is bad, but its kinda costly so before I shell out $90 and tear into the dash, I wanted to make sure of all cheaper alternatives. Oha and No, I will never buy foreign I have been in used car sales and I can tell you the foreign is better thing is just a myth!

Fords have always wired the taillights, markers and dash lights together so you can tell if you blow the taillight fuse (the dash lights don't work). I know you said you checked the fuses, but I would replace the taillight fuse with a new one, just to be sure.

As mentioned above, the bulbs in the rear for taillights, brake lights and turn signals are duel filament bulbs. In other words, they do the work of two bulbs in one glass fixture. If you remove one of them, you will see two filaments inside the bulb. The smaller of the two is for taillights and the bigger one is for turn signals and brake lights. They are two separate circuits, so one may work and the other one won't.

Fuses can look good but be broken in a spot that is hard to see. Change the fuse first... it's the easiest and cheapest route to start with. The fuse panel is usually under the left side of the dash, between the steering column and the drivers door. There is either a sticker on the cover to help you locate the fuse in question, or it will be marked next to the fuse on the panel itself.

Good luck and have a safe trip and happy holiday.

marker/tail light bulb is separate filament from Brake light/turn filament (hince it gets brighter when you hit the brakes or turn)

My guess is probable issue on the run light side of the headlights switch are out..can't get a look at my book to be sure...

That and there are fuses under the hood to check as well as under the dash (read the owners manual for more ideas)

I had that problem on a 96 Hyundai Accent. I found a hot wire under the dash, and ran it back to a tail light wire in back, and put a rocker toggle switch in it right under the drivers seat. The tail light circuit energized the dash lights. Never did find out what was wrong.

I'm thinking a wire might have been squeezed between two pieces of metal (mine was the backseat), It was 18 months efore the insulation wore through. There are a lot of sharp edges wirh wires improperly dressed and streached. It takes some driving bouncing on bad roads etc. to show up these random and uncomon problems . A sensitive ohmmeter will help you trace the wire tothe short.

Your Ford Focus turns on the headlights when you have the car running.

The rest of the lights won't work until you turn on the light switch.
