My wife and I now share a house w/ some people (we live in the bottom level).

On the stairs dividing the two levels, we have a baby gate and two curtains on shower rods (one on each side of the gate). The shower rods are velcroed to the gate.

Our cats CANNOT go upstairs. This has not been a real issue until lately.

The other day, we found the male cat upstairs shredding our roommates bed.

All of a sudden, he is going upstairs, even though we (my wife and I) are both downstairs.

There is only one door here, and it is to a small room we keep the cats in while we are asleep or at work.

I do not want to have to keep him locked up 24/7, but I am running out of ideas!

Can anyone help keep my sanity and relationship with my cat??

Where the stairs are, there is a hand rail that goes all the way down (meaning I can't do a door there) and at the bottom of the stairs, the room turns left and the opening is about 6ft wide.

So although I would like to put in a door, it really isn't going to be an option.

I think a door is the best solution. I'm sure you thought of it. There are pull out closet doors that are on a track too. That would involve more work. Maybe your landlord can help you out.

I wish you would have mentioned the ideas you had before you started to run out!

Remove the jimmy rigged door and head on down to Lowes. Pick up a pre-framed door, cheap and a few 2x4's.

Go up the stairs some to where its wall on both sides and mount the door on the stairs.

1. create a whole heck of a lot more privacy for both parties.

2. keeps cats 100% out of upstairs.

3. total cost, easily under $100, be surprised if it was more than $70.

4. locking them up is not an option as that will only cause behavioral issues over time. then you will have a mess on your hands.

Go to Home Depot or Lowes and get a door to install or perhaps lean against the opening to block the cats better.. The pet store sells boundary stuff, but I don't know how well it works. I hope your family get your own place soon!

You can try enticing the cat with catnip downstairs, while repelling him with ammonia or another "NO" spray upstairs or even on the first few steps going up. With the catnip, sprinkle it on all his fav toys, and scratching post, the furniture you let him use, and the litter box, and in general, making it really pleasant for him to stay downstairs.

Both are relatively undetectable to humans.
