In the task manager under performance Physical Memory shows:

Total memory shows 1022
Cached shows 485
Free shows 14

Where is the rest of my memory?
(Gears of War is unplayable)

there is no easy fix but there is a fix first you want to see what programs are running as soon as you start your pc things such as messengers and crap will load as soon as windows starts you need to disable them for beginners here is a good website

Run Task Manager or under Vista Performance Monitor. It will show you what's in memory--but not why.
Make sure you have scrubbed off the remora spyware and other detritus.

Start the Task Manager again. Click on the Process tab and look for the processes where the bulk of the memory is being used. Please include this information and we can see what is the problem.

you have a bunch of junk running, by the sounds of it your running Vista. Vista premium has a start ram of 1.21 gb (with default settings), I was able to get mine trimmed down to 590 mb.

if your running xp then you have got spyware and you need to get rid of it bad
