Why do you think there are so many drinkers and drug users? People saw the world and said to themselves, "I'm outta here." They took up drinking and drug use to not the see the world. Then again, maybe it's the other way around.

Well, I wouldn't personally know, because I'm not a drinker or a druggie. But, I've read a book about a drug abuser (it was her diary). After she started doing drugs, there "was no world without them.". Because of the wonderful things she saw when she was high, it made the real world seem dull, dark and depressing. The world she entered when she used drugs was much better than the real world; she became blind to the beauty the world without drugs has. She soon became blind to God, too (thought I should mention that since this is in R&S XD). So, I guess I'd say yes to your question :].

Actually, I've found that in some cases, those under the influence are more intellectual and spiritual. It may be that they're simply crazy after using drugs and / or alcohol.
However, I think that there may be at least some truth to the intellectual and / or "deep" things they often say. After all, it comes from the same mind -- that mind may be distorted, messed up, or just outright ruined, but it's still one and the same.
Therefore, I think that it simply depends on the person. Some people have the capacity to see the world as it truly is, be they under certain influences, or not. Some don't.

I think that some drugs offer us a different perspective on the world. Provided you don't destroy your mind, I think the added perspective can allow you to see the world more clearly. I think it all depends on the intent of the person. A drug user who is interested in seeing the world clearly will probably have more success than a straight person who isn't.

But the world is not just "one" way. Even individual lives are not limited to either "good", happy" or "tragic" and "sad".
Even in times of turmoil one can find sanctuary and joy. In periods of prosperity one can expect struggle.
Is the drinker merely celebrating, or is his life owned by alcohol. (while I do not advocate it) Some people can take a drug occassionaly and become victims of drug abuse.
There are those among us who are so distraught, in so much torment, who merely seek an escape........
Life is not black and white and it is certainly not always simple and easy to understand. I expect that we are all shaped by which side we see the most of.

Yes. If you want a truly enlightened experience, try fasting. The idea is to make the body week and rely on the spirit. The problem with the drinking and drug use is it's the reliance on the wrong spirit.

Yes, and a thousand times more, yes, I do. The assumption that only those who use these things can be supportive of the rights of others to do them is idiotic, and no better than assuming that if I support no-kill animal shelters that I am an animal in a shelter. Perhaps they cannot imagine that someone would be unselfish as to support a thing that does not directly benefit them. That says a lot about their mindset.

Some experience with psychedelics can help you see to what extent "reality" is dependent on our perceptions and preconceptions. There are more elegant ways of getting there, but they take more effort. In either case, though, you will discover that there is no "truly", there's just "is".
Dependence on drugs or drink is another reality altogether.

I think there are many ways to open the mind ~ drugs being among those ways ~ but it's not necessary. Many people are able to see the world as it is without drugs.
I'm not sure alcohol opens the mind. In my experience it dulls thought rather than expand it.
