1. It depends on the brand. Both can cost up to thousands of dollars.
2. I would say flute, just because they are smaller. The fact that they are metal also means that they can be dented.
3. It all depends on how you treat your instrument.
4. Once again, it depends on how you treat your instrument. If you are careful with your instrument you should need very few.
5. As a clarinet player, I'm going to say clarinet. I find fingerings on the flute to be awkward, and it honestly takes more air to produce sound on a flute.
6. I think flutes, but I'm not 100% sure. As long as you keep them warm when it's cold, they should play fine. Clarinets, on the other hand, should not be played outside because the humidity ruins the wood and cold can cause the wood to split over time.
7. WOOD, WOOD, WOOD! Always wood. Wood instruments have a deep, rich tone. Plastic sounds cheap, pinched, and duck-like. The only thing a plastic clarinet is good for is marching band.

1- which more expensive?
My flute costs $7000, replacing my clarinet would be $3000. A contraclarinet (I play big clarinets) is over $10,000 new.

2- which more delicate?
Flutes can come out of adjustment pretty easily due to the size of the tiny parts but clarinets can crack. A cracked clarinet is an expensive repair.

3- which has more problems?
about the same. Mine go in the shop once each year for an adjustment.

4- which needs most repairs?
shouldn't need any real repairs (other than adjustments) if you take care of it - if you don't take care of it they are the same.

5- which is easier to learn?
There is no easy instrument to learn. The clarinet has that pesky break instead of overblowing the octave.

6- which one weathers better in different temperatures?
A cheap plastic clarinet or plastic piccolo. We don't take a quality instrument outside or in the rain.

7- which is better wood or plastic ?
Wooden clarinets sound better than plastic. Precious metal (gold/silver) flutes sound better than plates and brass. Wooden flutes sound great but are prohibitively expensive and prone to cracking. Plastic is always better for playing outside.

1) Beginner models both would be similar prices! I would get a gold plate unless you are advanced!
2) Flute is def more delicate one bent key and your are history
3) Problems instrument wise? Neither instruments don't have problems unless you misuse them like drop them etc
4) Instruments don't need much repairs unless you do the above. Both will need the yearly once over though
5) Easier to learn depends on a whole lot of factors. How big or wide your lips are etc. Best thing is to try them both. I have some students who took I lesson to learn Clarinet but take a LOT more lessons to get a sound out of the Flute!
6) Both the same really although Flute doesn't tend to change that much. And the things that it does change you can fix e.g. pitch.
7) To learn plastic! Wood Clarinets and Flutes need special attention which is hard to learn for a beginner. In terms of Sound they are the same (when you begin) But as you get more advanced you will have to go wood! Esp with the Clarinet

OK--1 depends on the make, 2--flute probably, but pretty close, 3--neither, 4--see above (absent misuse), 5--equal, 6--probably clarinet, 7---flute, metal. Clarinet, wood.

These are both tenor or soprano instruments, treble clef. The clarinet is a reed instrument, the flute is not. You can buy decent examples of both for 200-300 dollars. On the othet hand, a "Powell" flute can cost many thousands. Some claim that it is worth it.

Kinda just depends on the sound you would like to be making. As far as difficulty, or the degree of effort required to become proficient----same thing.

Slide flute???? Huh? Joke???

1. Depends on the brand and the specifications included in each instrument. Both can range from $500-thousands.
2. Neither. Flutes are more likely to get dented, but clarinets are more likely to break or chip.
3. Neither, in my opinion. Both have similar issues with intonation and keywork.
4. Neither, it depends on how well the musician takes care of the instrument regularly.
5. Again, neither. Flutes have less fingerings to memorize, but they're expected to have a very high level of technique. Clarinets have more keywork, making fingerings a challenge.
6. If you get a plastic clarinet, both flute and clarinet will be okay in different temperatures. Both have similar problems with pads during extreme weather changes. If you have a wood clarinet, extreme temperature changes will make it dry out and crack easily.
7. Again, it depends on the situation:
If the clarinet is for a beginning student, plastic is better (ebonite). It's more durable and lightweight. For an intermediate to pro player, wood is better because it provides a deeper, rich, quality sound that a clarinet should produce and is expected to produce. It weighs a little more, but the tone quality is beautiful.

PS, in repose to leftie.....
Side flutes?! hmmm.........hahaha

Repairs don't always revolve around pads....what about springs/screws/dents?....there ARE plastic clarinets......wooden flutes HAVEN'T BEEN USED FOR CENTURIES, unless you're specifically referring to modern-day recorders, which are not used in TYPICAL band situations........both clarinets and flutes come in their own case....normal use creates problems eventually because pads get worn, springs and screws rust, the body/keywork tarnishes for both....
