Then don't get a dog! There is no such thing as a dog that doesn't have SOME smell, just as all humans have a scent. It's a fact of life. It is also a fact that they shed hair, skin cells, can bark, whine and cry. They also eat and drink, claw furniture, chew shoes, pee, poop, vomit, track dirt in the house, and REQUIRE MEDICAL CARE. That means that, yes, you have to take them to the vet regularly and pay the bill. You have to have their teeth cleaned regularly just like a person; in fact even more so since they don't use toothbrushes. They also need immunizations. And if something develops such as a chronic health problem then you will have more vet bills. If you are that fussy about odor, then get a mechanical pet from Toys 'R Us.

Many dog owners have many dogs and don't have smelly houses. You may be one of those people that smell what you see. You see a dog so you smell dog. If that is the case then you are probably better off without one. It would not be fair to get a dog and then end up getting rid of it or throwing it outdoors because it is smelling up your home. I would go to a few more peoples houses that have dogs and see if you think that their houses smell bad too. Then you will know if it was just that one dog owner or if it is your over-sensitive nose.

BTW. ALL puppies make mistaqkes in the beginning. Are you going to be able to handle the housebreaking phase with all of its delightful smells? If not... then may I please suggest that you consider getting yourself a mature dog from a shelter or rescue instead!

If you are planning on getting a dog but, don't want the "stink" then you should plan on bathing your dog on a regular basis.. Clean the ears and brush a few times a week... If you can't do that then taking it to the groomers would be another option...

Good luck

I have two dogs and my house does not stink and I don't use air fresheners. It's a matter of keeping them clean and bathed regularly, keeping them off upholstered furniture and human beds, washing their beds regularly and using throw rugs that can be cleaned over hard floors instead of carpets. My dogs also don't get free run of the entire house - we have a few dog-free rooms (like the kitchen, living room and guest room).

Wet dog smell on rainy day, that's it.

I have two small dogs. I get them groomed on a regular basis, and vacuum constantly. My house doesn't stink. Your friend needs to clean, not just mask the smell of her dog.

I never had a problem with my dog making my house smell bad. I would bath the dog once a month & wash her blankets every two weeks.

To add to the other answers, I don't really think that it is all the dog's fault. It sounds like to me that your friend needs to retrain the dog to potty outside. The dog may be using a hidden place to go potty. Keep that in mind if you get a dog.

keep it clean... getting a dog does not mean your house is going to smell. You have to clean the dog and your house, the dog can't take care of itself. If you are that concerned, don't get a dog!

Then don't get one, every time dogs go outside and come back in they have an odor. There is nothing you can do.
So forget getting a dog, they stink.
