every time i try to write in columns, the sentence continues in the 2nd column, i want it to go straight down it goes like this:

mary had a little lamb it's fleece as white as snow.

how do i make it go like this:

mary had a little lamb
and it's fleece was as
white as snow

Do you mean in Microsoft Excel? since you mentioned column instead of table.
If so, your sentence would not move to next column unless intentionally you broke the sentence and continues it to the next column.

Assuming cell A1: mary had a little lamb it's fleece as white as snow.
Hit F2 from your keyboard; see on small box at the right top that displays A1, means that your sentences is in 1st column only.
Now, click cell A1 then go to Format menu | Cells > Alignment tab > Text Control > give check mark in Warp Text > click ok.

Then adjust the width column in cell A1. The result would be:
mary had a little lamb
and it's fleece was as
white as snow

Make sure under format you have selected columns and under view you have selected print layout
