I don't become offended. I still celebrate Christmas with my Christian family, however, it means different things to each of us. To them, it is the celebration of Christ, our / their Lord. To me, it's an opportunity to gather with family and mingle.
Either way, we all enjoy the holidays, or at least try.
Just the same, I rarely wish specific to the holiday in question. Instead, I make it generic; "Happy holidays," or "Hope you have a great winter break;" generic things of that sort.

As an atheist I do not get offended in the least by someone saying something like that. I can understand why someone would be offended by another assuming that everyone celebrates Christmas, but really, I just enjoy the general good feeling around the holidays.

I would be absolutely mortified if someone told me to "marry Christmas"...this is America, and I choose who or what to marry on my own...don't need other people's meddling in my affairs...
Seriously, though, I celebrate Christmas, and my grandmother, grandfather, aunts, and cousins were just exchanging "Merry Christmas"'s with me and my parents not but an hour ago. Nothing harmful about it.
Edit: I'm curious about how you knew he was offended by this...did he just gasp and shake and his head? Did he have some sort of mental breakdown, quivering on the floor, at seeing or hearing those abhorrent words that were not meant to be uttered from the lips of any man and bring about nothing but destruction and madness? Did he go on hissy-fit tirade, complaining to the manager about it? Or was he just incredibly P.O.'ed by the whole idea, running up the manager and slapping him across the face with a leather glove to challenge him to a chainsaw death match over this whole affront to his sensibilities? Because, although I cannot say I can support such reactions...I can support their hilarity.

Well I say Happy Holidays personally, but I'm not offended at all when someone else says it.
Now I have three times gotten attitude back from that. So I'm very sure that it pisses off a lot of people if you don't directly acknowledge them. So I can see where you might get to the point where you want to hit back a little.

I don't get why people get riled up about saying Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, Seasons Greetings, Happy Yule, etc. There are much more important things to worry about.

I don't believe ya, I've never met an atheist like that...every single atheist I have *ever* met knows that it was originally a pagan holiday anyway - *if* this is true (this is a new account you've set up...)then maybe he was just having a bad day - bad to take it out on you, but means it has nothing to do with his (lack of) religion...

Yeah, that whole thing is nutty. Christians get offended by my minister impersonation, too (got reported yesterday.)
Jaysussah willah free yer soulah and healah your holah andah he knows allah and sees allah.
Ha ha ha. People sometimes act like they got no brains, ya know?
Hey, merry Christmas everyone. It's a great way to celebrate the birth of a man we all love and owe so much to: Santa Claus!!!

I don't give a crap about Christmas. But I wouldn't get offended by a simple greeting. I just repeat it and go on about my business. Same if a person asks what my holiday plans are. Just say something and be done with it. It's nothing to get riled up over.

I wouldn't be offended, but I wouldn't return the greeting either. I would just say thank you and move on. I do not celebrate christmas, so I feel as though returning the greeting would be in some way a form of celebration.
