Need an idea for a house warming gift for 2 freinds. They mentioned that there place was kinda plain/"not spiffed up at all" would a gift card to lowes or a furniture store be a good idea or should i buy them something?

gift cards are great especially for homeowners. they will need everything. brass doorknockers are nice as are wireless doorbells. both are relatively inexpensive.

A gift card would be great, think of it this way, if you were in thier shoes, just moved in a place, would you rather get something that 80% of the time you would not like and end up throwing it in a closet, or get a gift card and get something that you know 100% you want and need?

a gift card is a great idea...

PLANTS!! Fills up a space. Personal (not a generic gift card) and something that can live for years.

Unless you know them very well and know their taste, it usually isn't wise to make a decorating decision for them in your gift. Gift cards to me for friends seem very impersonal although I realize they are highly popular. They just seem to be thoughtless. If you know them very well you should then know what they need and would like and use. If not, a welcome to their new home generic gift like a gift basket of useful items would probably come in handy especially for a kitchen.

Get them a puppy. He'll take care of the kinda plain.

a GC is probably the best idea - especially if you don't know their taste well. try Ikea, Crate & Barrel, or Pottery Barn.
