That is completely not true, as long as you continue to keep the cage clean you will not get any odor. Expecially enough to stink up even your whole room. I would make a deal with your mom and tell her that if it starts to stink then you'll put it in the basement. You will be able to show her how responsible you are by keeping the cage clean and smelling fresh. Maybe even consider puting one of those plug in airfresheners near the cage, but cleaning it should be more than enough. Parents love it when you look responsible, so see if your mom goes for the deal... it just may work.
Also to help your side it may be too cold in the basement which could make your guinea pig sick. Good luck with your new pet. :)

Mine lives in the living room and it does not smell up the house. My husband has asthma and rodent feces cause him to not be able to breath however, wherever piggy pees each day I take that out because their pee will smell if you leave it in there. Then twice a week I clean the whole area out and start over. My husband has not had a reaction to the piggys feces because this cleaning system keeps him from smelling up the house.
hope this helps

No, this is not true. Guinea pigs have no natural odor. The only reason they would ever smell is if you don't clean their cage.
Also, guinea pigs are social animals and should not be housed alone.. same sex pairs or larger herds are best.
I have the best website for you on guinea pigs. GuineaLynx is the best care, emergency, and medical guide for guinea pigs. It will be very helpful for now, and future reference in your many years of cavy slavedom!

they do stink. you need to change their cage at least once a week. my parents used to complain about the smell. it will stink up your room but i don't know about the entire house. give him/her lots of TLC.
