Personally, I belive that it truly IS their lawn. Not to say you don't have a right to peace and darkness if you wish, however, I think that they also have a right to display their affection for the holidays as they please.
Though, I can't help but question "gay atheist neighbors;" the statement you began with.
This is a question of etiquette; their orientation and religious belief has nothing whatsoever to do with it.
I'd say, just get thicker curtains. If it still shines through, they're simply not thick enough.

Maybe you should do the same if you have some lawn close to their bedroom window. Something nice and bright and BIG. So, when they come to you, you'll have the opportunity to say the same. But maybe at that point in time they'll understand from your point of view.

Give them one more warning to take it down or else you will call the police on them for disturbing you. I would do that, it's kind of like people saying "ohh I can play loud music all I want! ITS MY PROPERTY!" When property does not even have anything to do with it. It's a matter of respect. And why do you have to mention "gay atheist"?

Put tin-foil on your window.
Explain the situation about the brightness disturbing your sleep and ask them to turn it off at a reasonable hour (around 10PM).
About all I can advise if you want to keep it civil.

Now why should I listen to you when you say don't be rude, considering you have no problem being the rudest person on YA? So, I'm glad it keeps you up. Besides, didn't you know when you're asleep your boyfriend is over at the neighbors house?

If it is actually too bright and is bothering you, contact city hall to find out if they are breaking any ordinances. Did you actually ask them politely or did you say,"Remove your gay lawn ornament." You could try being very polite and maybe bringing cookies, you know act neighborly.

I agree, does it matter if your neighbours are gay atheist? It sounds to me that your peeve isn’t with the sign…
It IS there lawn, and there isn’t anything that you can do about it – should be able to do about it. Close your blinds, and if that fails, board your windows.

Are these the same one that poop on your lawn? They deserve a medal for living near you!!
Why are you sharing a room with your boyfriend? I hope you are not engaging in carnal sins as that is a sure path to your hell!!

Cover your window with dark curtains. You have a nerve to complain to them
