If you switch your puppies food without mixing it with what he has been currently eating, it's going to mess up his system and most likely get him sick. You definitely chose the right dog food with natural balance and it's a shame they fed him semi-moist food. Anyways, when switching any dogs food, it's crucial to mix in small amounts of the new food and gradually increase the new food until you use it fully. Good Luck!

Switching food all of a sudden can be upsetting to a puppy's stomach, so you are doing the right thing by mixing the new food into the old food gradually.

It can cause an upset tummy so it is best to switch gradually.
Something like a 1/4 cup in with the original kibble, then slowly mix in more and more of the new food. Usually this takes about one week.

Most of the time nothing happens. You might see some loose stools for a few days but that is about all. Generally if you are switching to a higher quality food there will be no problems. If you are making a sideways or downward switch those issues might happen.

The new thought now is with large breed dogs that you are better feeding the puppy dog food as the puppy food can contain a lot of fat and too much protein and so cause the dog to grow too fast. I fed my Airedale dog food from day one and she grew up fine. I would suggest talking to your vet and seek their opinion.

When feeding your pet a new food, introduce it slowly. If you feed too much too soon, your pet could suffer from stomach upset, diarrhea, vomiting, excess gas, or constipation.

Normal bacteria in the intestine help to digest food. A sudden change in food can result in changes in the number and type of bacteria and their ability to help digest food. Therefore, a pet needs to be switched to a new food slowly to prevent intestinal upset. By 'slowly,' we mean over the course of 7-10 days go from feeding 100% of the previous food to 100% of the new food. For example, make a mixture that contains 25% of the new food and 75% of the old food and feed that for several days. Then make it 50-50 for several days, then 75% new food to 25% old food for several days. Then you can start feeding 100% new food. If at any time your pet starts vomiting, or has loose stools or appears constipated, slow the rate at which you are switching him over.

It needs to be done gradually over about a one week period. If you switch dog food abruptly, it will cause vomiting and diarrhea and may even cause finicky food habits in the future

I don't know. I've never had that trouble w/ any of my puppies {I've had lots of puppies b/c I breed Jack Russells}. I have never gradually mixed it. I've never heard of doing that &I've never had trouble w/ them {upset stomachs}.
