I've been in the military fro 21 years.... never smoked, drink occasionally. Most of my friends are in the military and do not smoke. Some drink, some don't.
No, it's not part of the military life, just your friend's lives.

Well I am in the military, 18 years old, and have the most opportunities in the world to smoke and i dont. It has never really appealed to me. Most people in the military (well in the marine corps from my standpoint) smoke to get rid of all the stress they deal with, which is a lot more than you think. The reason military people party, drink and do stupid stuff is because its honestly a privilege to have liberty, and no one knows when they are gettin deployed, so you might as well live it up while you can.

Smoking was once part of military life. They even provided four cigarettes in every field ration, along with a book of matches. Cigarettes at the military exchanges and commissaries were much cheaper than in the civilian world because they were free of taxes. But, no more. Most military posts, stations and bases have "quit smoking" programs and one cannot smoke indoors.
Drinking used to be a big thing at one time as well. The night before I quit alcohol forever, the club was serving martinis for a dime apiece! My buddies said I downed over forty of them before passing out. I was lucky I didn't die of alcohol poisoning. Haven't touched a drink since then.
It seems there have been major changes since my days on active duty, all intended to keep members healthier and (as they once used to say): "Bright-eyed and bushy-tailed".

I have alot of military friends, too. They are all in the Army.
Most of them smoke and drink. Some just smoke when they drink hard liquor. Others do not drink until maybe the end of the week. Some start drinking as soon as they get home.
It is not part of military life it is just an option of habit that they are allowed to have.

I'm in the military and I do not smoke, and I very rarely drink. So not ALL people do. A majority yes, but not all.
