At a local deli, the guy takes your change and throws it in his tip jar then proceeds to say "thank you very much praise allah". if you try to take your change out of his jar he curses at you and tells you never to come back.

part 2: i work at a dairy queen and we have tip jars. one time a guy was about a buck short so he reached into my tip jar and started taking out quarters to pay with. i stared at him and told him to put the money back. whats wrong with people??

well the guy at the deli does this every time.

at dairy queen its happened a few times, other times people will just assume they can get away with being 50 cents short or ill make a $70 food order for them, bring it to their table, and they wont tip a cent. sorry if i sound like im complaining.

I've noticed that, too.

What bothers me about it is the presumption that everyone is going to be OK with it.

I think it is because with tip jars, there are no clearly defined rules.

The next time the deli guy makes change for you, put your hand over the tip jar, palm up and just say, sorry, I need all of my money.

Tips should be for full service restaurants or restaurants that offer some form of table service.
BUT a tip is for exceptional service, not just doing your job, unless it is a full service restaurant where 15% is standard.

You can't just take someone's change and throw it in a tip jar. The first time that happened I would have told him I need my money far more than allah does and taken my change. If he curses me, I would have told him to go f*ck allah and his homosexual camel.

Second guy is just an ******, or incredibly stupid. What you did was perfect.

Finally, the fact that some people don't tip is just a symptom of society. The problem is that while the vast majority of people are really cool, the tiny amount that aren't really, really f*ck the world up for everyone else. That's why I could never do your job.

Well, don't give him any change, or don't go back there.

It's inappropriate to "confiscate" your change. I'm having a bit of a hard time believing this. It sounds like a Seinfeld episode, with nasty racial undertones.

As far as part 2, some people are dumb. There's a difference between a "Take a Penny, Leave a Penny" tray and tip jars. You just probably served an idiot that day.

Crazy?

Did that really happen at the deli?

Maybe put a mouse trap in the bottom of the tip jar at Dairy Queen? : ) That'll fix him!

both are examples of stealing, part one the haji is the thief, part 2 the customer,
I would get my change back tell him off and he wouldnt need to tell me not to come back. Actually I would never have gone into a store run by a muslim.

part 2 i would have taken the money, moved my tip jar out of reach , put the dollar back in and told the guy he was a dollar short.

first of all, i'd never go back to the deli, and i'd have called the cops, even if it was just a bit of change, the customer chooses whether to tip or not, its a courtesy, not a right

as far as the second guy, what a nut job, i'd be too embarrassed to do something like that, thats humiliating......

Both of these guys were way out of line. But now is this a daily occurance or are you talking about a once a year incident?
If its a rare case just live with and get on with your life.

In situation number one, I'd say with a smile, "I'd like my change, please." If the guy does not comply, then report him to the Better Business Bureau.

In situation number two, the guy is also stealing. I'd say, "That's not your money, sir."
