You can squat either way, although it is generally recommended for newbies to do a reverse lunge as it provides a little more stability, and prevents you from leaning over your toes.

If you are trying to build your butt, legs I would highly recommend squats, plie squats, walking lunges with weight, and squat jumps (where you do a squat and jump up onto a platform that you progressively raise over time).

From my personal experience, my butt and legs really started taking on a lot of good shapes when I started doing squats.

I am not a doctor, so make sure that before you start/change any work out program that you talk to a doctor about what you are doing. You need to be careful that you have enough strength in your knees and legs to be able to do these complex movements.

The key thing is to make sure your chest does not lean over your front knee. Also, try to keep both your knees at 90 degrees and make sure that your back is strait and you're not sloaching! Gppd posture is the key! (And do them slow; hold it til it burns!) Gool Luck! ;)

keep your hips straight, that is the key, and do not let your leading knee go past your toes.

do it without weight first, then add weight once you get form down
