There is one man who has been in love with her since they were teenagers, but she loves him in the way a mother loves a child. They are both a few years apart in age. She does not want or need a romantic relationship with anyone for she is devoted to bettering the world. Is she killing him slowly?

This is deep. If he loves you he should love seeing you happy, or when you are most happiest, do not shun him away, that is like taking away the times you better the world or when you get joy out of that. Let him know how you feel. And tell him how it is. tell him you love him though not in the way he wants..let him down easy

She needs to tell him that and then it is up to him to accept that and move on. She can't control it if he doesn't, though. All she can do is be honest with him and not lead him on.

No, it's not her fault. You can't help who you love, only what you do about it. She isn't required to love him, but she should be sensitive to his feelings.
