To be their Messiah, when the SanHedrin was also Hebrew - what had they against the Messiah being Jesus.
Why would they doubt him, and reject him, when all along, He did good things for the sake of Man. Even to be sacrificed, for Man's sake . .
What proof - against Jesus, being the Messiah they had waited for, and had been been in the Prophecies mentioned to arrive to Them, - did they rely upon to refuse Him, as The ONE expected?
What exactly had they against this fine Man, whose ministry was one of Love, Civility and Salvation?

I am extending the expiration date on this question because I want to print the answers and study them carefully toward a vote. Not any longer familiar with Christian scripture, I'm having difficulty giving the most deserved answer the vote.

The Jews wanted a King that would win their earthly battles. Jesus didn't fit the bill. As He said, "My kingdom is not of this world."

The opposition that they had for Him was that He "made Himself equal with God":
John 5:16-18
16 So, because Jesus was doing these things on the Sabbath, the Jews persecuted him. 17 Jesus said to them, "My Father is always at his work to this very day, and I, too, am working." 18 For this reason the Jews tried all the harder to kill him; not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God.
NIV
Matt 26:63-66
The high priest said to him, "I charge you under oath by the living God: Tell us if you are the Christ, the Son of God."
64 "Yes, it is as you say," Jesus replied. "But I say to all of you: In the future you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven."
65 Then the high priest tore his clothes and said, "He has spoken blasphemy! Why do we need any more witnesses? Look, now you have heard the blasphemy. 66 What do you think?"
NIV
That is the same opposition that comes against Him and His followers today. The devil and the world don't mind man-made gods or even a non-trinitarian Christianity, but they cannot accept that Jesus was the sinless Son of God Who came from heaven to redeem sinners.

The Sanhedrin were largely composed of the ruling class of Jewish people - many of them Sadducees. They weren't really awaiting a messiah at all, except in perhaps the vaguest sense of the word. There was a tenuous peace between the temple authorities and the Roman authorities, and the main motive of the temple authorities was, "hey, we've got the temple back, life is good, let's not rock the boat."
There were plenty of people even among the Pharisees, as well as the other sects at that time, that were willing to accept Jesus as the Messiah. But in the end, he didn't fit their idea of what a Messiah should be - a conquering king who would establish the Throne of David and subdue the foreign oppressors.
Peace to you.

The Jewish religious leaders had moved away from God and were more into themselves. They were opposed to the fact that Jesus couldn't be tricked into going against the Leviticus Laws or The Word. Also, they couldn't prove that He wasn't the Messiah. Because their standing was so high in the community, they couldn't stand being put down (even gracefully) by Jesus.

1) From THEIR point of view he was a troublemaker.
The longer he stayed around making the masses uneasy the more their position was threatened.
Also don't forget, the Romans ruled the area. If they began to feel that the people were not sufficiently controlled by the local powers that the Romans allowed to exist, then the Romans were likely to replace them with others.
Plus he called himself the Son of God, which is a no-no even today.
2) They needed no proof, it was expeditious. Like Guantanamo Bay is today.
3) Jealousy, self interest, fear. The usual reasons for bad behaviour, I guess.

They were waiting for someone "Divine". Most "Awesome". They wasn't waiting for a carpenter's son. I did ask a Jewish man about what you're asking. He said to compare Almighty God to a human is like comparing a human to a dog. In other words "Why would Almighty God send down his son to such a very low status."
Also when Jesus was preaching on and teaching; he saw a lot of hypocrisy from the Sanhedrin's and did point out their faults in public. The Sanhedrin's did not like that and started to feel threatened by Jesus. From there it born their outright evil intentions and actions.

He was a threat to their power over the people as the religious leaders of Israel. A personal threat to their "religious" life style. They had long forgot what their office was created for and much like some preachers today, they grew fat and lazy and greedy and control freeks. This Jesus claimed to be God. That meant they would have to make some changes for sure. They pulled out all the stops and even hired false witnesses against Him. This can happen to anyone who depends on their religion/denomination/sect/works to get them to heaven. The real deal comes along and they don't even recognize the Truth any more.

The Jewish religious leaders of the first century failed to manifest the mental attitude that Jesus had. Their resolute determination not to listen to Jesus was demonstrated when he raised Lazarus from the dead. For any with a right attitude, that miracle would have been proof positive that Jesus was sent from God. However, we read: “Consequently the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered the Sanhedrin together and began to say: ‘What are we to do, because this man performs many signs? If we let him alone this way, they will all put faith in him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation.’” Their solution? “From that day on they took counsel to kill him.” Besides plotting to kill Jesus, they set out to destroy the living evidence of his being a miracle worker. “The chief priests now took counsel to kill Lazarus also.”

Cause they believed and still do that thier messaih was going to come the way they think and want
just like most people still do today
they thought he would come with agreat army and take over and cast the romans out
yet jesus came with no reputation and nothing that would make one desire him
BUT he came according to scripture and prophecy they simply cant see
and so it is still today many want God thier way and when he comes they say its not HIm cause it isnt the way they THINK
the reasoning is off as it has always been since man was formed
EVE tried to THINK when the serpent used reasoning to twist Gods Word
and the San hedrin did the same
THEY tried to reason in themselves its impossibale for thier messiah to come as a lowly man , and not some grand King with an Army
YES it is still TRUE
every one wants thier saviour to be what they want to satisfy themselves , and still refuse to accept HIM as HE is
GOD , Saviour , Mediator , Holy GHost
Father , son , Man , flesh , Holy , righteous ,
and JUDGE !!!
the say He is LOVE , yet wont accept Love even has consequences !!
One cant say they LOVE then not abide with the one they say they Love !!
God is HIs WORD
and HE cant be seperated from it
and as HE told the sanhedrin
BEFORE Abraham was I AM
they was going to stone Him cause He put Himself
as GOD which He was..........and is
And because of that FACT
they sough to kill HIM
and they killed His disciples for preaching HIS NAME
the NAME of the FATHER
HE came in
" I COME in my Fathers Name "
and that Name was and IS
JESUS !!!
will you oppose HIM even now ???

Like many such committees, they wanted to maintain status.
The Hebrew vision of Messiah was as a revolutionary.
They were afraid the Romans would put down any uprising.
They themselves would be blamed, deposed & punished.
As it turned out they were correct but 70 years early.
The Romans suppressed the Maccabees uprising.
The Temple was destroyed & Christians dispersed.

Jesus might have been a wonderful person, but he did not fit the criteria of the Messiah. Plus, the idea of "the son of god" is unbearable for the Jewish belief.
