I know this girl who is very worried that she might lose her kid. She is getting treatment for being depressed and harmful to herself, she IS getting help but she is still worried that the military will take her child away. Does anyone have any words of wisdom for her that i can relay to her? Is this possible even though she is reconizing the problem and seeking help for it, can they really take her kid away from her?

If she is a danger to the child, then Child Protective Services will remove the child from her custody until she is no longer a danger to the child.

The military cannot take anyone's child away, it has to be civilian authority who does it. The military can notify CPS if the Commander, or an Army doctor sees a threat to her children.

The military wouldn't do it, they'd notify child welfare in the local area. If her depression isn't child-related (no threats of harm, child ok, etc) she's probably okay. If she loves her kid enough to be worried about this, I would assess the risk level as low.

Words for your friend: Tell your doctors the truth and you will get the help you need. Don't game them, don't play them.

I had suicidal ideations as a staff sergeant. I got help. I retired as a master sergeant. I got medals and doodads and responsible jobs. My career didn't suffer.

If you feel overwhelmed and need to talk, I guarantee you that your chain of command cares and WILL talk to you and make sure you get the help you need. You just have to do your part and reach out.

The military can't take anyone's child away. The most that could happen is the MPs take custody of the child if they feel he or she is in danger and then they would have to refer any problems to the local Children's protective services which is civilian.

The military has no jursidiction of child protective services. They CAN alert the local civilian authorities may take her kid away, but not the military. And as far as the local authorities, if she is a danger to her child then yes they can and take her away.

The military will not take her child away, but child services can if they feel that the child is in danger by staying with her. Has she spoken to the base chaplin? that may help. She can also call Military OneSource.

im in a group home for parenting teens and they took my child away temperarily because of my many hospitalizations and overdosing and cutting/harming myself. yes they can take your child away but only temperarily, until you can get your stuff together and work on your problems.but there is always hope. but the millitary wont take the child DCFS or a private child care service will take the child temperarily if the mother is willing to improve and they go to court.

Assuming that she is in the mil.
It may be a good idea for her to update a family vare plan ( if she is mil, she will know what that is)
They will not "take her kid away" however if it is determined that he is not fit to care for herself or a child by law, the child will go to who is listed on her care plan.

Um.She's already going through a tough time. Government has a habit of saying your un-fit for the littiest things.
Tell her that your here for her, and for her to keep in mind that she is the best mother she can be to her daughter, and no paper can change tha.
Just be strong, and you as a friend, stay with her through this.Let her know she has people there for her, that care about her.!

She needs to talk to here Sargent and/or Sargent Major.

Unless she is very harmful to her child, they may request that she just sends them to an after school program.
