From a material science point of view, liquids have no long range order in the arrangement of atoms or molecules. Liquids will have some short range order. Solids have long range order (they are crystals). Gasses have no short or long range order. Window glass is a liquid based on the arrangement of molecules even though it is "solid" in our common terminology.

A liquid's particles are less densely packed than a solid and they slide past one another. A liquid has no definite shape or volume but takes the shape of the container it is put in.
