I agree with 1st answer.
I have a buffet of food out 24/7 for my cats to self-feed and a can in evening per day for them to share.
Are you sure your cats are "greedy"???
Maybe they're just hungry and underfed.

First off pay particular attention to Ken's answer, he saved me a ton of typing!! If you must feed dry kibble, then go purchase the best quality out there - of course it is going to cost a lot more than special kitty crap from WalMart but in the end, you will discover several benefits - the cat's hair, eyes etc will become so much more healthy. Secondly their 'output' will not be as smelly or as much - showing you that more is being effectively used by your cats. And thirdly, your kitty will live a longer and happier life!!
Your cats may not be getting adequate food with the amount you feed - free feeding is best if you stick with kibble. I buy a high quality kibble for leaving out for nibbling but raw is provided twice a day. that I do NOT leave out - it's removed and/or discarded after an hour.
Now sometimes you do find you have a cat who's appetite is messed up and wants to eat all the time - of course they'll end up fat - but usually this is a metabolic change/problem. diabetes or thyroid issues - usually from feeding crappy food to them. but try the free feeding = go to a high quality kibble OR even better go raw - you'll find you have a whole new cat then!!

The problem is, you are feeding kitty crack aka dry food
They have to eat more to get what they need
Nutrition since there are so many bad things out there is very important to your cat’s health
Contrary to what you may have heard; dry foods are not a great thing to feed a cat.
Please read the label on what you are feeding? What are the ingredients? Do you know what they mean? Is the first ingrdiant a muscle meat like chicken or meal or other things?

Dry foods are the number 1 cause of diabetes in cats as well as being a huge contributing factor to kidney disease, obesity, crystals, u.t.i’s and a host of other problems. Food allergies are very common when feeding dry foods. Rashes, scabs behind the tail and on the chin are all symptoms
The problems associated with Dry food is that they are loaded with carbohydrates which many cats (carnivores) cannot process them. Also, Most of the moisture a cat needs is suppose to be in the food but in
Dry, 95% of it is zapped out of dry foods in the processing. Another thing, most use horrible ingredients and don't use a muscle meat as the primary ingredient and use vegetable based protein versus animal. Not good for an animal that has to eat meat to survive.
You want to pick a canned food w/o gravy (gravy=carbs) that uses a muscle meat as the first ingredient and doesn't have corn at least in the first 3 ingredients if at all. Fancy feast is a middle grade food with 9lives, friskies whiskas lower grade canned and wellness and merrick upper grade human quality foods. Also, dry food is not proven to be better for teeth. Does a hard pretzel clean your teeth or do pieces of it get stuck? http://www.felinefuture.com/nutrition/bpo_ch4a.php

Cats like to nibble all day and night so you need to leave dry food out for them all the time. If they are acting greedy, they may not be getting enough to eat. I feed my 2 adult cats 1 6oz can of food, split between them each evening. That stay down from dinner time until just before I go to bed. Then there is a bowl of dry food which is replenished when it gets low. (Probably 1 1/2 cups per day)

Unlike dogs, cats supposedly only eat until they are full. They don't 'overeat' as a rule so leaving the food out is fine.

I'm sorry but I have to disagree with 'Ken' but dry food is not 'kitty crack' as he says I have SIX cats who eat dry food. They all eat at different rates, some want their dish filled more regularly than others. They will only eat when they are hungry. (only use GOOD quality dry food)
