A deferred disposition is where the charges are placed on hold for an agreed amount of time (6 months, a year). If you complete the requirements of the deferred disposition then the charges are dismissed. If you don't, then you get convicted of the original charge plus any other charge that violated the deferral.

Its a good deal because if you keep your nose clean you end up without a criminal record.

Simply, it means that you (or your attorney) can ask that the court set aside their option to file formal charges or make a judgement in your case for a certain period of time to allow you to demonstrate to the court that you will not repeat the behavior. It's kind of like probation, in a way. If you don't get into any trouble, the charges are either not filed or dropped and your record remains clean.
