According to Joseph Smith, Jr., the literal translation of Mormon (a proper noun) means "more good."

Mormon was the next-to-last prophet on the American continent, the father of the angel Moroni. Mormon was born around 310 B.C. and died 385 A.D. The plates consisting of the Book of Mormon today were abridged by Mormon before he passed them to his son for safekeeping.

Mormon, a well-to-do prominent citizen, had become one of the youngest generals of all time, commanding armies at the age of 15.

The LDS church uses a set of scripture (other than the Bible) called the Book of Mormon. We believe this book is a record of the ancient Americans and another testament of Christ. One of the prophets in the book is called Mormon-- hence the Book of *Mormon*. When the Church was started, people just adopted the term "Mormon" for members of the church. It was originally meant to be a rather derogatory term to call an LDS person Mormon, but it's not anymore.

According to Joseph Smith, Mormon is a hybrid word consisting of two words. The first part of the word is a contraction of the English word, "more"; the second part of the word is allegedly taken from the Reformed Egyptian, -mon, "good. Joseph Smith claims -mon is from a language no longer spoken and which was so altered by those who did at onetime speak it that it resembled no other language. In this way, Joseph Smith hoped to achieve his purpose: "the subject is put to silence."

The term "Mormon" has its origins from the Book of Mormon, which is believed by Latter Day Saints to be a collection of writings and teachings of the ancient prophets and followers of Jesus Christ who lived in the Americas from approximately 600 B.C. to A.D. 421. Mormons believe that Joseph Smith, Jr. translated the Book of Mormon into English by divine inspiration from golden plates that he received from the angel Moroni. Mormons believe that the Book of Mormon is another scriptural witness of Jesus Christ that is comparable to the Bible, which they also believe to be the word of God.

He may have been named after the Waters of Mormon, which were known for their purity. "More good" is very close in meaning to purer. Although the written language of the Nephites was derived from the Egyptian, there is no direct correlation for the spoken language of the Nephites. Most of our modern prophets have offered their opinions on various subjects, but they have never claimed to be infallible, or to have a perfect knowledge of all things. Joseph was no different.

Mormon was a prophet in ancient America - he was responsible for abridge the many "boks" of plates into a single book - the Book of Mormon. It is now used to describe members of the LDS church - which is kind of strange cos you dont called other Religious groups after the name of their holy book.

It is the name of an ancient prophet who abridged hundreds of years of records into the Book of Mormon, another testament of Jesus Christ. Antagonists of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints nicknamed them 'Mormons' after the Book of Mormon, which was written by the hand of Mormon.

And the Moroni = Moron jokes are getting really old, guys.

It was originally meant to be a condescending term for members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It came from the Book of Mormon, that we follow. It didn't stick quite the way people wanted it too, because we wore it with pride, and it has stuck to this day.
