Why do you call it hunting when you shoot the animal when it is standing over the food that you are feeding it? I see no sport in killing something that is comming for a free meal. To me it is the same as shooting a caged animal. Hunting is about skill, not the best feed. Am I wrong?
I can understand setting out feed spots all over the land to lure in the critters into that area so you have a better chance of getting one, setting up scents and useing calls to lure them in and then sitting in the blinds or tree and then waiting on one to come walking in. All these methods take skills to nab the animal because you need to know the area, how to use the scents and calls.
I know a few hunters that sit over the feed and then shoot and all they will tell me is they know they will get something that way. I am not here to gripe I would just like to know why you feel it is still considered hunting and why you use this method.

I too agree with baiting if it is to try to get rid of a problemsome animal, more so if the animal(s) are a risk to people.
baiting is allowed here in Michigan..

From what I have gathered, people who posted to this question are hunters and no one is saying getting rid of hunting in a whole. So i have no clue what you were implying when you brung up "lets get rid of all hunting"
This question was ment to be towards "hunters" that used bait piles because I was wanting to know why they felt it was still considered hunting when they don't use any skill to hunt, just feed.
I didn't vote to ban dove hunting, I didn't vote to stop cyote or fox hunting. I dont think anyone that posted is saying lets get rid of hunting, rather lets stick to what hunting is about, SKILL.
Screw PETA and every other org. that is trying to ban hunting. Most of the members are a bunch of crock any ways, they act without thinking.
They have done some good but I wouldn't give them a lick of money.

I have hunted for 30+ years and I do not use feeders or bait, however it is legal in most states. Just like everything else these days people want it easy and quick and bait or feeders do that.
You are correct that hunting is hunting not killing and in my personal opinion baiting should be illegal. However it is not in most states and it useful for handicapped hunters and young kids who lack patience. In some areas that are very thick and difficult to hunt it allows you to effectively control the population.
Virginia banned feeding of game animals and I think many more states should follow.

Remember one thing people - the antis would love nothing better than to continue creating this divisiveness in the ranks of hunters so they dont face a unified front. Lets outlaw bear hunting, then dove hunting, then hunting with dogs, etc until finally ALL hunters are fighting among themselves - and by then there will be no one left to defend what YOU have deemed an acceptable hunting practice.
Bottom line, if its legal, its legal and usually supported by game management needs. Here in SC, you can bait in lower part of state but not in upper - more deer in the lower part, and they need to be taken.
You can call it hunting or call it shooting, but if you dont want to use this tool, THEN DONT, but dont take away that right for others who may want to or even need to, ie handicapped.
Finally, rarely does a trophy quality animal just saunter out to a bait pile at high noon for you to casually take your shot. Does may and do come readily to feed, but not the old educated trophy quality bucks.

I'm with you 100%. It should be illegal. And hell no, I'm not going to stand up for anyone who wants to do it just so anti-hunters won't get an edge. Don't you see that's the problem? We allow and condone the crap that PETA and the others use as examples to make us all look bad. We as sportsman need to stand up as well and say, "Hey, that ain't us, I don't agree with it either!" Otherwise we will be thrown in with the rest. I also don't believe in these "caged hunts" of exoctic animals either. You want to hunt a lion? Get on on airplane and fly to Africa. There, the lion has a good chance, but don't drive to Texas and shoot a drugged up, former petting zoo lion in a fenced enclosure. PETA gets ahold of that film and trys to use that to get the deer season shortened VA.

I am against baiting. There is no far chase with baiting and far chase is part of hunting.
However if there is say a rouge mountain lion or bear that has been destroying live stock or endangering people then baiting is ok in my book. Much easier to identify the right animal at a bait station.

it is legal in nc. i do not like it and do not allow anyone who hunts on my land to bait. these are true hunters who must learn where the deer are and when they should hunt. a friend took a nice 8 point saturday afternoon sitting on the ground under a tree in my pasture after only about 15 minutes after he got here. he has been hunting here for 18 years and knows what to do.

Hunting of Bait piles is an acceptable method we use in predator hunting.
Now for large game like Deer, Elk, Moose ect... I am total agreement with you. I do not think hunting over a 55gal drum of sawet corn is hunting at all.

I live in Indiana and if you put bait out, it and all the contaminated soil around it must be picked up prior to the beginning of the season for that particular species.

This is very unsportsman-like. I don't believe in baiting either. It doesn't give any challenge or give the animal a fair chance. It's wrong. I believe it's illegal in many states. I think it is here in UT.
