You count the "points" at the ends of the tines, and usually it's referred to by half the total points, or atypically, the points plus whatever abberant point is in there too. The bigger the number of points - usually the bigger the animal (the tougher the meat, too).

I assume you are talking about points (or tips) of a deer's (Buck) antlers. You count them. If he has 4 points (or tips) on one side of his antlers and 4 on the other side then he's a 8 point buck.

Thats how many horns the deer has on his rack.... you count all on each side... so if he has 4 on each side hie is an 8 point.... 5 on each side, then a 10 pointer.... easy huh?.....
