OK people, in the Air Force your rank up to E-4 is based soley on time in grade (TIG) and time in service (TIS). The first stripe you test for is E-5 (Staff Sergeant). That is why it is usually harder to make rank in the Air Force. You will put on E-3 (A1C) upon graduation of BMT. If you actually read your contract, it will tell you this. You will be able to sew E-4 (SrA) on at the 30 month mark, along with 6 year enlistees. The only way to make this any faster is to make SrA below the zone. That is based on performance, but it is usually only given out to about 10% or less of the people in you squadron, and that is the only way performance can enhance your career up to E-4. For all you people that are not in the AF, maybe you should listen, instead of speak about what your branch of the service does. Each branch promotes differently. There is NO way you can make E-4 in under 2 years.

Mac and Sharpie have it exactly right. Just from different set of circumstances.

If you got E-3 by signing up for a 6 year contract then you will not actually be going in as an E-3. You will get it either after tech school or at 20 weeks in service which ever comes first. If it is this route then it will be like MAC said and you will not put on E-4 until your 36 month (3 year mark) or 30 month mark with Below the Zone.

Now if you got E-3 due to College credits or JROTC hours, then you will be getting paid as an E-3 from day one in basic but you will not sew on the stripes until Basic Graduation. If you go this route then it will be as Sharpie said and you will be eligible for E-4 at 28 month mark.

Another possibility is if you are Air National Guard. If you are guard then you will sew on E-3 at the end of basic, and more some AFSC's you will sew on E-4 about a month after Tech School.

The only other way to get E-4 early is if you joined with a Bachelors degree, but I doubt that's the case as you already said you are starting as an E-3.

If you go to basic as an E-3 then your DOR (date of rank) will be the day you go to basic but you will not actually wear the rank until graduation day. It does not matter how long your tech school is or how well you do grade wise, you are not eligible for E-4 until you have had 28mths TIG (time in grade). I know this for a fact because I went to basic as an E-3 and no matter how long your enlistment is for, the promotion to E-4 only comes at 28mths TIG or 36mths TIS (time in service) whichever comes first. In your case, since 28mths is before 36 that is when you would put on SrA. The only other way to put on SrA early is to get SrA Below the Zone in which case you would put on 6mths earlier than you would, which would make you eligible to put it on at 22mths TIG. BTZ is pretty hard to make and you have to have a very competive package to make it, but it can be done.

You wont be an E-3 in basic training, everyone is an Airman basic (E-1) during basic training. Depending on how you get E-3 you can sew it on at graduation of basic training. If its because of college credits you have, you sew on at graduation. If its because you have a 6 year enlistment it will more than likely be after you complete tech school. After that its a bit over 2 years (28 months) before you sew on SrA (E-4) unless you get BTZ (below the zone) and you sew it on 6 months early (after 22 months from your date of rank).

WHAT R THESE PEOPLE TALKING ABOUT?!?!?
assuming you enlisted in the stripes for education program......
from A1C it depends on if you are AF resreve or active duty
also depends on you getting senior airman below the zone
also depends on your AFSC if you are reserve
then it depends on the length of your tech school
and you will need your 5 level
reserve 9 months
active i think is like 2 yearsish
e-4 is not easy to get
e-5 for active duty is even harder!
average for pin on is 3-6 years!

How long is your tech school?

If over six months, you should be promoted from Airman 1st Class (E-3), to Senior Airman (E-4) by the time you graduate tech.

depends on how many years you enlisted. if it was 4 you would sew on e-4 at 36 months
if you signed up for 6, you will sew on around your 30 month mark....

you won't actually be and a1c while in BMT...you'll sew on right before you graduate
