The Army already did and Marine Corps special operations battalion did too thought most of the Corps still uses the M16 mainly because there are so many in the US arsenal

I suspect it'll be a matter of phasing the M4 in and not replacing the M16. Cost is a big factor. If the war in Iraq and Afghanistan should end tomorrow, there might be enough money in the pipeline to get lots more M4s. But that doesn't seem likely, so I'd say that some troops will still carry the M16 awhile.

The M4 is not set to replace the M16 completely. The M16A4 is currently replacing all of the M16A2s in the Army and USMC. The M4/M4A1 is only replacing the M16A2 in units where a smaller weapon would be more practical ie Cavalry, Armor, and Light Armor Units with the addition of some Spec Ops units. The USAF still uses the M16A2 and has no plans to replace them. The only units in the USAF to get the M4 are the Spec Ops and Security Forces guys.

not every one in the marines carry them and i am glad because the m4 is not as effective at longer range and the knockdown power isnt as good either although the m4 is better in MOUT environment because it is smaller the trade off isnt worth it to me.
now if we would bump up to a 6.8 insted of a 5.56 i would be happy
