My budgie is 5 years old, and he has learnt how to mimic other birds, because we live near a native forest. I want to know if I can teach him to mimic my voice. is he too old to do this?

There are a lot of good Websites regarding Parakeets.

Parakeets are able to live from 8 to 20 years depending on how well they are taken care of in the home.

Parakeets do not mimic voices they mimic the words. Some Parakeet are able to learn whole sentences, their address, the name of their owner. You should spend at least a whole half hour a day with your Parakeet. Even if just talking to your Parakeet out side of his/her cage.

Parakeets are social birds so it is good to have a male and a female and if you are able at least two. I have two at this time and I am thinking of two more because they do need social interaction.

This past fall my one bugie Blue Berry got out of his cage and escaped for a day, my other budgie Blue Bell, she helped me in finding Blue Berry. When budgies are lost they have a certain call and the next afternoon we found Blue Berry.

It is important to teach budgies. I like watching GumbleBoy on the Internet because he is so patient with budgies and he and his wife are very good with them. I am including a web-site for you.

He probably already does. He might squabble so fast that you don't catch the words. My mother's bird imitated my father calling her name, her whistle to the dog, and her laugh. If you call your dogs, etc. he might repeat those words. You have to watch out, because if you swear, he might imitate those words too!!! (my mother's budgie could swear very clearly - listening to my father)! You have to spend a lot of time repeating a word, or a phrase like "good morning baby," over and over again to your bird. It seems that of the birds I owned as a child and as an adult, there were birds that talked and those that didn't. Males usually talk. I don't think at 5 years if your bird doesn't talk that he will, but it's worth a try!!!! I think my parent's birds talked because the TV was on all the time and they called to each other, or to the dog.

yes there is always a chance! parakeets learn quickly and love socializing:) much like people. in order to get him used to different noises and voices keep a radio or cd playing, my parakeets loved it when i turned on the radio they even seemed to sing along in there own little way. this way your little parakeet can pick up new words or phrases maybe even a song. hope this helps, good luck!
