I was at a local huge retailer today, I have been looking at TV's and was hoping to find what I was looking for ! many customers where doing this as well. on one particular TV there was CNN on and it showed some victims bombed in some place in the world .PPl where mourning the loved ones they had lost and tears where going down this elderly lady's cheeks ( i think she was palestinian or Iraqi -not sure! I suffer terribly when I see that stuff -they showed blood and bodies ! I 'm not sure how long I was standing there , I had blocked out all sounds
it seemed! then the sound came back and I realized a family next to me where looking at the same TV - but laughing , and saying how cool the TV's picture was -news still showing the terror and blood. I watched the family laughing and looking closer at the TV ,when the woman of the potential buying family turned around I saw a huge cross around her neck!
my throat closed!
merry Christmas??????are you sure it's merry?
They bought it!

We Americans can be so self-absorbed... sometimes it seems our compassion is absent.

Isn't it terrible when you see stuff like that on TV? As long as there is hate in this world, you will see stuff like that on the tube. Hate is not of God. As for what you thought was a Christian standing there because they wore a cross means what? Nothing. I am a Christian and I never wear a cross. If I was standing there I would be horrified to see that myself and may even have had a conversation with you about it.

Many people have become desensitized to violence and pain by todays media. I don't believe there is any reason for showing graphic images of peoples suffering on the television. It's only purpose is to gather ratings to increase the cost of advertising at that time slot. makes you wonder about whether the human race deserves to survive.
As long as there are people such as yourself who still find this offensive, regardless of their beliefs, well, maybe there is a small hope for humanity.
Edit: After reading the answers above mine, I can't help but notice most "Christians" only response has been the defense of their religion, not many have commented on the horror that is todays 'news' broadcasts. Their actions are more indicative of their beliefs than their claim to a title.

This reminds me of when I first saw footage of Holocaust death camps in history class. My classmates were laughing and goofing off, while I sat in the back with tears running down my face, thinking of all that suffering. At that moment I almost hated my classmates, and later the teacher explained that their laughter was a way of blocking out what was too terrible for them to cope with at the moment. They just chose not to acknowledge it, but that didn't mean it they weren't aware at some level.
I hope that's what was going on with that family. And really, if we felt that kind of empathy all the time, we'd go crazy, perhaps?

the mere fact that they were unaware of your horror, much less what was on the tv speaks volumes, but i have to agree, a cross around the neck is pretty meaningless. i should add, tho, that i am working today in a room full of people who consider themselves christians, but who are the most bitter and spiteful discredits to the civil service i have yet witnessed, so it's not a stretch of the imagination, but when it's the dominant religion, it automatically attracts all the hypocrites.

Yeah kind of make me embarassed to be American. Many Christian Americans make this country into the world joke. Only just like the news footage, it isn't very funny.

Beware of wolves in sheep's clothing,
also some people buy crosses just because they like the way it looks, Not always because their Christian. I have a big ol cross, a real bling bling cross but I didn't buy it because it was a cros i bought it because I liked it.

Not to defend their laughter, I just think part of the issue is that over the past 5 years we have been so bombarded with images of people suffering that it gets to be a little numbing after a while..

That's really bad...
What you have to understand is that this might not be a reflection on the individual people. Our society has been REALLY desensitized to death in general- sometimes the ones who haven't been desensitized even have to joke around to deal with it.

Your going to judge our entire religion for what you saw one family doing? By the way, the plural past tense of "is" is "were" not "where".
