I am taking a job in DC and seems the lowest cost of living that I have found thus far is in Baltimore Co...so I will be commuting. Mapquest says 1 hour and 8 minutes. Is this pretty much accurate?

If one leaves between 6 AM to 10 AM - closer to 2-3 hours.
After 10 AM - maybe 75 minutes without any accidents or other issues.

{EDIT} I have commuted via public transportation between Towson and Bethesda and that option also takes 2.5-3 hours each way. Some DC commuters live in Philly suburbs and leave home at 3 AM to reach work by 6 AM.

Map quest is wrong on the time. You will be traveling in one of the top 1 worst traffic spots in the USA. Rt 95 south in MD is bad. Rt 495 (Beltway) is the 2nd worst spot in USA.

Towson is at the top of the Baltimore beltway (12:00 position). YOu need to travel to the 6:00 position to pick up Rt 95 south. Baltimore has bumper to bumper rush hours Figure 30 mins at least.

Rt 95 south is heavy. Figure at least 45 mins to get to the beltway (495). On 495 you will be at least 45 mins. Then you need to travel into DC via Rt 355. Figure at least 30-45 mins. On Rt 355 you have NIH and the Navy Hospital. Thousands of people work in this area and Rt 355 is a regular road. Nightmare.

So the trip from Towson to DC - on a good day figure 2 hours each way. On an average day figure 2.5 hours.

You may find housing cheaper in Baltimore County, but the taxes are much higher and the travel time just doesn't make it that great. You can find some nice housing in Montgomery County with a 45 min communte. Email me for more information.

During rush hour (6:30 a.m. to 10 a.m.) count on around 2 hours at the minimum. The reverse will be a little longer and the evening rush hour begins around 3:30 and lasts until around 8 p.m.

This is a quality of life issue. You would spend around 5 hours per day in heavy traffic? That is not worth any job.

Unless your job is a low paying one (under $50K per year), you should find housing in Maryland. It is very high cost of housing but if you want to run with the big dogs you have to pay.

Mapquest only tells you how long will it take in a perfect weather and no traffic jams. It's also not included accident or construction going on. If I were you, I would add at least 30 minutes in the event of unforeseen situations.

If you're going to commute from Towson to Washington DC then I recommend taking the MARC train instead of driving.

/ Stay away from Baltimore, or Southeast D.C. (for safety reasons).

Try Prince Georges County first, then once you build up some money, you can move to any of the affluent counties surrounding D.C.

plan on an extra 30-45 minutes depending on traffic and how exactly you drive it.

Be aware that Baltimore Cty also has the highest crime rate of the area too.
