You should buy/rent widescreen DVDs. If you buy "full screen" DVDs (4:3) then you will either get bars on the left and right or you will have to stretch the picture to fit the screen (everyone gets fat).

Also, keep in mind that many movies are shot in aspect ratios even wider than 16:9 (cinemascope 2.35:1 or 2.4:1), in which cases even a "widescreen" DVD on a widescreen TV is still going to have letterbox bars at the top and bottom of the screen. It's the only way you can fit the whole picture on the screen without stretching it.

Widescreen.

A "Full Screen" movie can have as much as 22% cut off from the sides of each scene on the disk. Nothing your TV can do will put back this edited material.

If you love movies and want to see everything as shown in the theaters, get widescreen.
