Get enough sleep (8 hours adults, 9 hours teens, 9 to 10 hours adolescents) get some exercise most days, at least 1/2 hour get good quality sleep - if dogs are barking in the night, or a nearby airport keeps you up, play soft music all night to block out the sound. If you suspect a sleep disorder, then google sleep hygeine and sleep disorders & get more info on this. Don't multitask. Research proves our brains handle one thing at a time best. If we do 2 things at once, we don't perform very well. Pay attention. Many times, we don't form a memory to begin with. Use flash cards and crib sheets if you are in school. If you are in school, write formulae, names, dates, etc on the inside front cover of your exam booklet as soon as you get it, if you are worried you will forget those things under pressure, or have a poor memory. When you meet someone new, use their name a couple times while you talk to them, to get it into your head. Form an association, like if you meet someone named michael, think of michael phelps and olympic swimming. This can help a lot. I still have trouble, becuase I have bipolar disorder & that messes up memory, so as soon as I get away, I write their name down. Or, ask for a business card. In a sit down meeting, write their names down right away on your notepad. Study and memorize the name later & remind yourself a few times until you have it down cold.

I have found that doing brain teasers and word finds are a help. They encourage me to concentrate better. What I just learned in Nursing school though I found to be really interesting. There has been some research done on this in people with Alzheimer's and early stage dementia-- Peppermint !
I guess peppermint oil or hard candies can help increase memory to some degree, its still in studies but I find it to be quite interesting.

It comes down to doing exercise for the brain and using some form of herbal essence like CQ10, peppermint, or B vit. A friend does cross word puzzles, it is fun and helps keep sharp.

eat berries, they contain nutrients that are especially good for strengthening the connections between neurons which is how memory works.. berries of any kind will do (as long as they are edible) and also if u create a little story in your head you can remember huge amounts of things, once i remembered in exact order 30 random words that were given to me without rehearsal, i just had to connect them with a story. it really works. you can also use mind maps. this divides the information into "chunks" making it easier for your brain to encode. remember to write on the lines. one way of remembering something is to make sure it stands out in your memory, so if u do something crazy while trying to memorise something, be sure u WILL remember it because of the high levels of a particular hormone u had while remembering, which makes it stand out in your mind. u should always associate things and create a "chain" in your mind. this way there is a continuous connection which cannot be broken easily and you should go over it again and again to make it stronger and it could stay in your memory for years to come :P

I would suggest maximum number of hours of sleep. I mean that. Sleep is essential to how the brain copes with load.
