Our department is going to dinner for meeting our year-end goals. They are going to take us to a very expensive restaurant. After looking at the menu online I don’t see anything that I would want that’s less than $30 to $40. It’s a steakhouse so they have seafood, steaks and salads. I will more than likely want a seafood dish or a steak. The thing is EVERYTHING is outrageously priced on the menu. The side dishes are like $7 each. I am pretty sure the company will also be paying for cocktails.

I am also sure some people will order coffee and dessert. We went to another expensive restaurant last year and I heard the bill was over $1,000 for twelve people. I like to get what I want when the company is paying for it but I am always modest and I use my best judgement. I don’t go overboard just because I can, and I would never want to be viewed and greedy and tacky. When I was in another department and we went out to dinner, they had pre-selected menu items that we could choose from so maybe that’s what they’ll do this time.

First of all congratulations. You were raised with modesty, respect, and consideration. Good for you.
If I were you, I would go along with what most of the people are getting around the average price range. If you like a seafood plate by all means go for it. Honestly I don't think the receipt will show "Co-worker Sandy selected Bass."
And most of all have fun. Remember the company is thanking you for all the good and hard work. I wish I worked for your company!!

Like you said, they may have pre-selected the menu. Maybe not. I'm sure if they chose the restaurant, they have an idea of the *average* meal price, not the lowest, so they know what they're getting into. You have the right idea in not going overboard just because you can, but you should feel free to order what you like.
Keep in mind that a lot of company dinners, even for holidays or celebrations, are written off as a business expense, so it may not necessarily be coming out of the company budget (or your paycheck down the road, lol).

The company picked the restaurant fully aware of it's prices. As it is a steakhouse, most people who eat meat will probably be ordering one, but you will find that regardless of whether they order seafood or steak, it will be an expensive experience. At restaurants like this, the sides are usually sizeable. My husband and I usually share one. Ask the waiter if they are and maybe you would prefer to share a side with a co-worker. The company is treating you to a very nice evening for meeting your goals. Instead of stressing, just enjoy.

If the supervisor/boss has selected the restaurant, then they are fully aware of the potential cost. They expect everyone to order the average-priced meal, including at least drink and dessert/side dish per person. So they are aware of the cost and are satisfied that it is within the company's budget.
So as long as you're not ordering something that twice the price of the average meal there, no worries! Enjoy! Live it up!

Where all the items on the menu are expensive I would not worry about it too much. The company has to be aware of what this will cost them. Order your entree and if you are worried about looking bad, skip dessert and limit the number of cocktails you have.
Enjoy it, it is a reward after all!

The menu prices will not come as a shock to your employer as I am sure they picked this restaurant to be a nice reward for the employees. Order whatever you want -- lol well don't go as far as ordering one of everything and asking for a doggie bag at the end!

They expect you to go overboard. Get what you like and to hell with what other people think. What is tacky is inviting employees to a dinner and having pre-selected items picked out for them. Why not just have a caterer?

Don't worry so much! The company likely makes just a bit more than they pay you...just because it's expensive to you...it's a drop in the bucket to the company, and they'll most likely write the expense off anyway!

I would play it safe and be in the lower to mid range. But if everything is expensive....then you have no choice...and it is fine to order. Just don't over-do it, and that again, would be ur judgment - about what is too much, and what is OK.
If in doubt, discuss this with a trusted friend-coworker.

If they are taking you to a fine resturant they are well aware of what they are getting themselves into. Just get what you like. Believe me, there will be some getting the most expensive thing because they can!!!
