Two of you are close: Yes, one is St Peter, but who ELSE came to Rome a little before him?

1) St Peter and Paul
2)Keys were given to St. peter "I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven." Matthew 16:19
Sword is in connection with St. Paul. "For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword" Hebrews 4:12 St. Paul as we know was an amazing fearless preacher of the word of God.

Peter and Paul.
(Mary wasn't around the day the sculptures were done.)
Peter holds the keys - See Matthew 16
Paul holds the sword - See Ephesians 6

Plato and Socrates. You can tell by the beards.
The keys represent Plato's well know love of Alicia Keys music. The sword represents Socrates strong desire to know what it was he just drank.
But seriously...
I'ma guess that one of them is St. Peter with the keys to the Pearly Gates (used to keep vikings out of Heaven's pool), but the sword dude - hmm... St Augustine?

Or a better question:
Where did the Roman church get the money for St. Pete's
*hint the Fuggers may have been involved... I don't want to make it overly easy but this fund raising technique upset a famous person"
edit-- Everyone give up? Ok I will tell you. The selling of indulgences and simony. Three cheers for the "true church" and the wonder of St. Pete's!
edit-- Ah but the ends justify the means right??????
edit-- knightofchristandmary, hate to break this to you but Paul did not write Hebrews. It is an anonymous work and the only thing that is agreed upon is that Paul did not write it.

Peter and Paul.
The keys is the keys of Heaven and Hell to bind on earth and it will be bound in Heaven, etc. etc.
The Sword is what Paul brought into homes all over the area...too bad I still don't like him at all.
