Flatter him....ME!!! lol Seriously!!! Blokes love flattery just as much as girls!! 8)
Laughter is a fantastic ice-breaker, too... You'll know the time to ask.... and keep his gaze... it shows that you really are interested, and that it's not a trick question!! Plus... it's a wonderful feeling when a girl asks you for a date!! It means that the onus is taken off of the guy!!! Nice!!!
GO FOR IT!! YOU'LL BE SURPRISED AND HAPPY!!! AND you'll wonder why you fussed in the first place... Very best of luck, Sweetheart!!

Take it one step at a time. Ask him if he'd like to go out sometime. The answer will be either yes or no. Ask him to call you to follow up on agreeing on time/ place if yes. If he doesn't call, that qualifies as a no even if he said yes.
Are you tracking? Sometimes people are incapable of being honest and direct so you need to be prepared for this.

Just be genuine and dont get too nervous. Maybe you could say:
"we should get together sometime" or buy tickets to something like a hockey game and tell him you have an extra ticket and ask if he is interested in going.
Just be you! Good Luck! :)

It's only as "akward" as you make it! ;)
Seriously, though, it doesn't have to be such a formal thing. If you think he likes you, then start a casual conversation, and slowly, but surely, work it to your advantage (e.g., "How was math class? Yeah, I have trouble with that, too. Have you heard about that new movie that deals with math?" etc).

You should joke around a little saying, "When are you going to take me out".
That always worked for me and I am 28 now to my wonderful husband and that is how I asked him out 8 years ago.

Flash a boob. You'll be so embarrassed you won't think anything of asking him out. And he is sure to say yes.
