I wanna become closer to my coworkers but im very, very shy. what should i do to get them to realize that i am a nice person without looking like im trying too hard. suggestions?

I wouldn't buy them anything other than a nice card that wishes them season's greetings. Buying them gifts or lots of food to share may get you noticed but do that after the cards. In January on no day in particular bring in some bagels and send out a message to everyone. Also ask some of your coworkers an opinion on whether they've seen a good movie, or do they know a good place to eat around the area for mexican food, these type of questions are easy to answer and break down barriers. Soon you will find lots in common and slowly make your way to workplace friendships. As an aside, I dont' work with you but you sound like a great person and I'd be happy to be your Yahoo Answers friend. :) Take care.

1. Bring in cookies. See from all the answers above, this is a really common one!
2. Start watching a popular TV programme to give you something to talk about.
3. Ask this question "So did you do anything interesting over the weekend?"
4. Buy something funny to go on your desk.. it will be a talking point!
5. Be interested in other people and ask them about their life.
6. THE MOST IMPORTANT THING - try your best at your work! As soon as your colleagues see that you are a hard worker and good at your job they will respect and like you (because they are able to rely on you) and they will WANT to get to know you!
And lastly I want to say there is nothing wrong with being shy and actually there might be a chance that your coworkers just are not your type of person. If this is the case, dont worry about it, and focus on the good friends you have in other areas of your life! :o)

Give everybody a little Christmas gift. Maybe make some home baked goodies and put them on pretty colored paper plates. Wrap the plates in colorful saran wrap and tie with a nice Christmas ribbon. It's a small gift, but it's endearing because it's from the heart.

Listen to their conversations and ask them questions later about their kids or spouses. Bring something for the office on an off-day (not for the holidays). When you get up to get something, ask everyone if they need anything. In general, smile when someone says something funny or kind. You don't have to talk a lot to be liked.

Be nice and polite, have a smile for people and be cheerful rather than down. People are drawn to a happy demeanor rather than a sour one. You also have to be a bit more motivated to step outside of your shyness and interact with them. Listen to their conversations with interest and ask questions. It doesn't hurt to ask "how was your weekend" or "did you have fun at the game". People like you when you take an interest in them.

Feed them. Cookies, brownies - especially now with the holiday season, there is every reason to have a plate of cookies around. Then just chit chat with them; it is hard when you are shy, but once you take that first step, it will get easier and easier.

Bring in some type of food for everyone. Doughnuts or anything chocolate are great. Tell them it's an early Christmas present.
