I just read an article which stated that the USS Ronald Reagan sea vessel costs 2.5 milllion per day to operate. Why does this sea vessel and all others cost such a staggering amount of money per day to operate? Why exactly does it cost this much money to operate? Thanks very much!

Think about it:

Pay and benefits for 6,000 people
Meals, housing and assorted services for that same number of people
Maintenance for something that big

I would say that the Navy should be commended for doing it all as cheaply as that.

The USS Ronald Reagan is the largest aircraft career in the world. It can carry over 70 aircraft that can fly every day. The parts and fuel for those aircraft cost a staggering amount of money. Plus the Reagan supplies food and fuel to conventional military ships at sea. The nuclear fuel that is required to run the Reagan is basically the cheapest cost of the ship. Also, if you could tie the electrical power of the Reagan into the power grid of North Carolina it would power most of the state.

You should know that there are 5,000 navy people on board, and there are around 90 aircraft. When you take into account paying the sailors, and feeding them, and fueling the aircraft, along with repairing the RADARS, Computer equipment, and the planes... the costs mount up fast. 2.5 million for one carrier is a good deal. The US Navy has 13 so...

hmm, 6,000 men on board, fuel, supplies, food, etc it all adds up rather quickly as some others have stated. It might sound like a lot but the reality is very different.

There are over 6000 people in the crew. That's about $400 per day per person to operate, including salary. That doesn't really seem that outlandish.

It's a carrier. so naturally it have 5000 navy sailor aboard, and 90+ aircraft, and more.

how is that a staggering amount of money? look at what it is what it does and what it takes to get that done. we spend more than that on government giveaway programs that gain us little if anything

Ummm... keep in mind they're taking salaries, food, fuel and parts all into account with that figure!
