Out of all my piercings, my tongue piercing was the LEAST painful when I got it done. I didn't even flinch because the groove down the middle of your tongue (where the two muscles lie on either side) have relatively few nerves. You can't even say it "hurts" because there's really no pain but if you have to compare it to something, a flu shot hurts a hundred times more than a tongue piercing.

Now I do have to admit, even though it doesn't hurt one iota when you get it done, the three to four days following it are atrocious!

My tongue swelled up and I couldn't talk, chew, drink or swallow for a good three days. Fortunately, I had some liquid codeine that took the edge off so I could get to sleep at night, but it still hurt like the dickens even after taking codeine. I can't imagine how bad it would have hurt without a narcotic analgesic.

Just remember that they will put a "training" bar in there until the swelling goes down and whenever you wear a bar, make sure that you put the rod through from underneath so the ball that screws on/off is on the top of your tongue. That way if it comes loose while you're eating or sleeping it won't lodge in your throat and choke you to death...literally.

Try to stay away from the litle acrylic balls too. They're pretty, but the threads on those strip out so easily and if you don't carry a replacement at all times, your piercing could close up if it hasn't healed all the way...and getting it pierced a second time HURTS unlike the first time because of the scar tissue built up.

Once you get it done and it heals, always keep the ball on the underside clean and clear of plaque buildup. The underside ball will get the same kind of tartar/plaque buildup that you get on your teeth. It has come to light in recent months that a tongue piercing can increase your chances of a heart attack. Although they don't go into specifics, chances are the chalky buildup on the underside (the plaque/tartar) is the biggest contributing factor.

my niece had it done and she said it didn't hurt at first but then it hurt really bad and when she ate it stung even worse. Also your mouth is the germiest place on your boddy--yes even worse than your bum....I'd really think over why you WANT one.
My guess is that since your asking about it, you don't really or you would have made up you mind already.

Its really bad for your teeth. You can chip your teeth and constantly need fillings. Plus you can get an infection on your tounge.
