Very probably. When my kids were younger, we'd watch the Santa tracker or similar websites - the site would say that Santa was approaching our area and they needed to be in bed around 8:00, and my kids would high tail it to bed.
Edit:
I think that the possibility of magic is a good thing in some ways as it helps develop children's imagination.

Hopefully the little tykes will not realize that they get the presents irrespective of whether they are naughty or nice.
I think it is pure sentimentality. We enjoyed living the fairy tale when we were credulous little kids, as adults we get a vicarious joy from seeing it in our children.
Also we can stitch up Santa for bringing them the stack of books and other mind-expanding toys, rather than the Wii, PS3 computer, pony and the latest tickle-me-til-I-throw-up Elmo that they asked for.

Another form of religious control, the only thing religion is good for against people who believe. Nowadays, most kids who aren't brainwashed see sense in how foiled religion is. However, in this case, they would rather go to bed than not get christmas presents as they see it as a threat from you rather than santa.
Maybe i'm wrong, but it's how i've always seen it.

I always figured that Santa Claus was just practice or training for the real thing - Believing in Jesus with the hope of a reward. Get them trained to be good with a more tangible reward - getting lots of presents! - and they'll be more willing and likely to believe in God. Tha main difference is that when you're bad, Santa brings you a chunk of coal. When God decides you're bad, you are the coal.

You've discovered a "parenting shortcut." Each time you use one of these, you let your children get the upper hand, and manipulate you, and thus they raise themselves.
Stress, being tired, etc, are not good excuses to not do the right thing. Raising your children is the most important job you will ever have, and really it's the only one that matters. Ditch Santa and do it properly!

sounds like a means to an end. gives the story purpose and a reason for existing so i say its a very likely possibility that this is the reason the Santa monster has been continued in our society

Saint Nicholas of Myra was a 4th century Catholic (i.e. Christian) bishop of Myra in Lycia, a province of the Byzantine Anatolia, now in Turkey. Nicholas was famous for his generous gifts to the poor, in particular presenting the three impoverished daughters of a pious Christian with dowries so that they would not have to become prostitutes. He was very religious from an early age and devoted his life entirely to Christianity. In Europe (more precisely the Netherlands, Belgium, Austria and Germany) he is still portrayed as a bearded bishop in canonical robes. Long after his death, the relics of St. Nicholas were transported to Bari in southern Italy.
He is alive. I believe in Santa Claus, because he is real. He lives in heaven, as do all who have died in God's friendship.

Why would the birth of the sweet baby Jesus be stressful in any way? Why do you need Santa when you already have God? Why would you ever have to pretend there is an all-powerful, magic man who judges you and rewards you if you are good and punishes you if you are bad? How could expect anyone to believe that very long anyway, when any educated adult would know it is an obvious ploy to make people behave?

knowledgeable christians know the very genuine and extremely genuine tale of St. Nicolas. The bastardized version, approximately some guy in a pink tournament, breaking into properties, and sliding down chimnies and all that.......is in accordance with comsumerism and product promoting. it quite is an identical with Jesus. there is an extremely genuine and genuine tale........and the completely ludacris bastardized version for simpletons, who hate interpreting. None in background deny Christ lived. yet who he became into and what his genuine time table became into.......is the place the pink tournament and flying reindeer are available in. the respond is......awareness is ability .
