How do you get annoying clients off your phone?

After they've stated what they need just politely say... "Well Mr/Mrs/Ms So and So, this is a time sensitive matter and I want to address it immediately. Thank you so much for getting in touch with me. I will call you back with the needed information tomorrow (wed) whenever.

I use the hold, "hold on a moment my secretary is trying to get my attention."

I then hold the phone for a few seconds and then say " I'm sorry something has come up in the office that needs my attention. It was good to hear from you - and I hope we resolved things satisfactorily (or whatever fits)." Then say goodbye.

Two good points: I am self-employed, my "secretary" is my 4 year old, and my office is in my home.....but hey......they don't know that!

Be polite yet firm - "Thank you for calling about- address specific topic- I have a meeting right now but as soon as I have a resolution for you I will let you know.
OR
If it is just one of those people that call to talk - "Thanks for touching base and it is always nice to hear from you but I have an appointment and need to get going now. Talk to you again soon."

I say, "Well, okay then, it was nice talking to you." then I say how I'm going to take care of whatever they wanted taken care of. And, if they still keep talking, I just keep repeating it, every time there is a pause.

Or .. Oh crap..my arm just caught fire.. I need to put it out!
