You will need a passport as proof of identity to go through customs and to get onto the ship.
The rules have changed for US citizens entering and leaving the US.

As far as a passport taking a long time, it is depending on where you live. The process WAS taking quite a while because everyone was in a RUSH to get them, but mine took 2 weeks and it was not expedited. Still, you should start the process NOW!

OF COURSE you need some kind of ID, Driver's Licence and Birth Certificate. If you are under 16, then just b.c.

For many people, it's just the experience of being out on the open ocean, being waited on constantly, having unlimited amounts of food, and having all kinds of things to do (shipboard activities) all for the price of admission. It's also an opportunity to get a taste of various ports of call without having to arrange travel and accommodations there. It's a very luxurious and comfortable way to travel. You certainly don't want for anything (except booze, which you have to either pay for or smuggle on board). And, it's great for kids, young adults, and seniors alike. I've been on a few cruises, mostly out of San Diego to the Mexican Riviera. But, also out of Galveston to the Caribbean. I prefer cruising out of San Diego, because I live about a 10 minute cab ride from the cruise terminal. And, I get kind of tired of the same Mexican ports. But, my wife and I always get the expensive suites off the back of the ship and have a great time.

Of course you will need ID to cruise to the Caribbean. Unless you are driving to the cruise port, you will first need ID to board the airplane. Secondly, at check-in for the cruise, you will be asked for ID. A passport is the best. You will then be photographed for your keycard ID. When you get off the ship in different ports, you must have your keycard ID and passport.

Yes, before you go you need your driver's license or State Id, and until Dec 31st, a CERTIFIED copy of your Birth Certificate. (meaning, one that has the raised seal on it.)
After Dec 31st you are going to have to have a passport.< This process takes a long time, and costs about 100.00 dollars, it is going to go up to 300.00 next year some time. The passport is only good for think 5 or so years, and then needs to be replaced. Weather you use it during that time or not.We just got back from their this Oct.

Yes, you will need a photo ID and starting January 1, 2008 all persons entering the US must have a valid passport. You will be required to show your passport when you check in at the port.
