Well I do abide by laws and restrictions that govern society. However, I think these laws and restrictions do not find their origin in any divine creator, but they are in fact the product of man’s effort to bring harmony among his own kind. During the course of our development, many societies would falsely ascribe the formulation of those laws to their respective deities in the hopes of giving members within their society an incentive to follow those laws, due to the intimidation factor that automatically follows giving an omnipotent creature credit for something. However, every law that has been written, is being created, or will be fashioned in the future is the direct result of man’s ingenuity, not the creative agency of any supposed God.

The Ten Commandments simple injunctions not to kill, commit adultery, steal, bear false witness, etc. existed in most societies for hundreds, if not thousands of years, before Moses supposedly received them on Mount Sinai. Even the great moral pronouncements of Jesus, such as the golden rule, did not originate with him, but can be found in most cultures, which predate his arrival to earth, by millennia.

There is no order in the Bible, which is beneficial to society, which other societies, who did not worship the Judeo-Christian God, have not thought up or put into practice. So I think it is a bit misleading to falsely laud your God for the laws that bring harmony and civility to our world.

Of course theists, such as yourself, never look at the flip side of the coin. Many abhorrent practices are advocated in the Bible, which no moral person would dare consider to be the mark of a healthy, orderly, or compassionate society. Take, for example, that the Bible condones slavery and treating women like chattel. In the Bible a woman’s testimony is only worth half of a man’s testimony, and killing individuals for not observing the Sabbath is completely legal. These are all “laws of God”. Honestly, would you really consider such a law maker just?

The Code of Hammurabi also prohibited stealing, murder, and telling lies about people. It predates the Ten Commandments by about 300 years. The Jews ripped off the Code to make their Ten. Hammurabi, by all accounts. was not a religious man. He just knew right from wrong.

Men wrote those laws, not gods. I follow the laws written by the State of New Hampshire, and the United States. Your gods had little to do with it, I'm sure. Get over it.

MAN is responsible for making laws. As far as morality goes, we are all born with a moral code. This is evident even in species other than humans...which have no concept of god. For example, there was an experiment done with monkeys. Every time the monkeys pulled a chain, which dispensed food to them, a member of their group was electrocuted. The monkeys knew that their friend was hurting, and instead of being self-serving, several of the monkeys starved themselves to death to prevent their friend from being electrocuted every time they wanted to eat. Where did the monkeys get this morality from? Was it from god, or are animals born with an innate sense of right and wrong, perhaps evolved from our need to keep social order and to survive?

Edit: For those of you saying that god gave humans a conscience, so he is therefore responsible for the laws that were made to reflect that conscience, what about the monkeys referenced above? Obviously, they have a conscience, too...does that mean that they have a soul? Will they go to heaven? It opens up a big old can of worms when we start talking about animals other than humans having conscious thought, huh.

Society imposes laws on the members of the society on its own. Murder is outlawed because its negative impacts on society far outweigh any benefits that could be gained from permitting people to kill each other. The same goes with every law, federal or state. These laws are based on public policy, not religious scripture.

Or is it your contention that God has serious concerns with the business deductions I should be allowed to take on my tax returns?

If they are in the US they are following English Common Law, which was based on Germanic laws that predate contact with Christianity.

A lot of people get that one wrong.

You don't need a deity telling you what is right or wrong and should be against the law: does it harm someone = wrong. Does it bring honor or help = not wrong.

Actually some cultures had these laws long before
God dropped them on Moses' feet. And there're also
numerous pagan cultures that had very similar laws
without knowing the least bit about your god. These
laws are fundamental for every larger group of humans
to coexist. If you strike out the very few "moral" laws
on that list you can say they are a universal necessity
for civilizations.

Your God also claims that Stoning is just punishment for unruly kids, and that eternal torture is just punishment for the requirement of tangible evidence for belief.

The Morality that you follow is not found in the bible. When was the last time you forced a woman to drink water tainted with dirt and sacrificial blood to prove she wasn't cheating on her jealous husband?

I hope you don't, but its right there in Numbers 5.

I know you claim that they don't count anymore, but that just enhances my point.

Morality as found in old religious documents is horrific, you should give it another read, this time thinking about what it would be like to be the recipient of such loving justice and morality.

Stop being mean to the Atheists. Of course they follow moral laws. So what God said don't do it, if he did not would you think it was right to kill, steal, cheat, lie? did GOD HAVE to tell you that was wrong?? I believe in God I am a Jew I believe in our covenent with God but even if I did not I certainly would still live a moral life.
