Yes, you are confused.
1. No one gets forgiveness on their deathbed seconds before they die. Whether they are a saint or a sinner, it matters not. One must truly repent before forgiveness is received. Repent is not saying you are sorry. God forgives no one because they die.
2. No one goes to hell for telling a lie. Whether they are a good pastor or a bad murderer. People only go to hell for one reason only-rejecting God.
Going to hell is not decided on whether or not you are a good or bad person, or what you do or to whom.
God never told us that we go to heaven if we are good- that is a lie right out of the pit of hell.

Two things - their is only one recorded last second confession in the bible. While there is always hope that the sinner will confess and come to the saving knowledge of Christ, it is rare that a horrible criminal will. In fact, the bible explains that there comes a point of no return for some.
Second, the bible says God's mercy endures forever. This is something I have learned through my personal experiences. When someone comes to know the saving knowledge of Christ, Christ has an investment in that person and is not going to let that person go.

Well neither of those will happen that way
If you think you will recant on your death bead you will die suddenly with out a chance to say anything
And one sin will not send you to hell
The pastor is most likely forgiven of all his sins and when God judges him that one sin against his whole saved life will account for nothing
People seem to not get it.
When God judges you at the end of your life He sees that you have truly taken Jesus or not. If you have then you will be forgiven of all your sins and enter to heaven if you say you have take Jesus as your savior but you truly do not believe you will not enter the gates.
Problem is those who hate Christianity have gotten it wrong and try to use things like this to claim that God is not just.
He is and if you truly have Christ in your heart then you can be forgiven.

How do you know that is the way God did it. The criminal gets forgiveness from man and not God. The pastor gets forgiveness for the good he did in his life. The one transgression is weighed against the good and the good will win out for God.

That doesn't happen. You don't have to ask forgiveness for all of your sins. You could gorge yourself with food (gluttony) and then walk across the street and get hit by a bus without being able to ask forgiveness for that sin. Jesus died for all of our sins, whether we ask for forgiveness or not.

I am sorry but we are not able to judge "what is fair or not"!!!!
You will never know the truth because only God knows people's heart, wishes and sins (confessed or not). God knows everything!!!!
You can never say who is or who was saved! It's up to God! He left His Words for those who follow Them!!
Stop playing this silly game! God is God and He doesn't give His Glory to anybody!
It isn't funny!

The question is.... would that actually happen?
Do you think that God would "take" someone right after they sinned....plus, even if that did happen, God would know whether or not that someone would have repented if he/she had more time.

Don't worry too much about sins. You won't commit any serious ones, I suppose, anyway.
So... enjoy your life!

Doesn't sound very fair. That's the sort of gray area that makes me feel very comfortable being atheist.
