First and foremost, I am not a brain washed moron as you might think if I give a good answer based on my beliefs.
Second, I am muslim but I am not a vegetarian. And I was born in the 80's so hopefully that is modern enough for you.
Third, I don't think there are any vegetarian muslims but there might be muslims that can't stand to eat meat. Like I can't stand to eat blueberry candy. It's just a preference and not a way of life.

God is not hungry for blood! The reason we sacrifice animals (either a goat, a lamb, or a cow) this Eid is because it is in regards to the story of Prophet Abraham and his son Prophet Ishmael. This Eid (Dec. 20 or 21) marks the end of our religious pilgrimage which you might know of called "Hajj".
We do not have any song and dance and there is no worshipping of the animal. The person who is sacrificing the animal prays to God to make the meat kosher which we believe is "halal". And we do not do this just for this Eid, we have all our meat cut this way so we are able to eat it.

You might also want to research this topic more so you do not have an opinion based on your beliefs. Please respect other ppl's beliefs too as you are not the only person on the Earth and there isn't just one religion.

We are not the only religion that eats meat. Why don't you say something in regards to Thanksgiving and how ppl kill turkeys to eat them when it isn't even a religious holiday. I don't understand why ppl always have something to complain about when it comes to Islam or its followers when there are so many other religions and beliefs that are similar. Start pointing your fingers somewhere else!

Just because your girlfriend is a vegetarian muslim does not change our religion or ever will. We do not kill animals for the fun of it and if you actually go and research real islamic sites/books you might learn why we do certain things in our religion and maybe you will be able to understand the religion better. I think your question should actually be "Why do humans eat meat?" instead of banging on a certain religion. We are not ppl that go and open slaughterhouses for one specific day. I think its best if you keep your vegetarian beliefs away from religious beliefs.

The problem is that religion caters to the desires of humanity. And, let's face it, humanity is selfish. How does this relate to sacrificing to a so-called unselfish "God"? Well, it corroborates humanity's supposed need and moral right to kill non-humans.
