If you had been my teacher I would have made a effort to say Thank you. Maybe the parents didn't teach them to say please and thank you.(proper manners)
I am sorry that it happened to you. Hopefully 2008 will be better!

I can't believe a teacher wouldn't have a solution for this problem....The answer is, use this as a learning tool so when they step out of school and into the real world they can always say that they learned from their teacher that whenever a gift is given(such as the one I have given all of you), the proper thing to do is give or mail a thank you card( I did not get one), so today , children you will be making your own thank you cards and I will help you with the proper words to use. At home you can make a couple of samples, and let the children choose which one they want to make...

Yes, it has to have been hurtful. No matter how young these children are, they should have been taught some basic manners by now. (After all, when you learn any foreign language, the word or phrase for "Thank you" is one of the first you learn. Shouldn't it be the same in one's own language?) However, just remember the incident of the ten lepers. Even Jesus got only a 10% return!

That's awful, I remember when I was little the teacher did a similar thing, and gave us old fashionned dolls. We were all thrilled, and definately said thank you. It's a shame children don't have manners. You sound like a great teacher though!

Nope, my mum noticed that when she gave her class cake. She was like, "Children these days, some of them were asking what flavour of icing it was or that if they didn't like it where would they put it."
You could give them a lesson on manners. Or if they are quite young you could tell it in a story way, not letting them know it was about them. But other than that there isn't much you can do, coz children are different now.

I feel your pain. Kids have no manners today.
My kids make out like bandits at Halloween because when they are given a treat they say "thank you, Happy Halloween". I don't know how many people have said to me that was the first, and likely the only thank you they would get all night.
Parents are nelecting their duties to teach their children manners. I remember my mother cuffing me in the back of the head for failing to say "thank you" for anything!

It's time to make a "thank you" card project. I had the same issue with my niece. I bought her a kit for making cards, and now she uses them. It could be that parents are too rushed these days to teach their children the right manners. As a teacher myself, I find that some of the day's work is basic life skills.

That's terrible, I'm actually not shocked, how old are they, they sound very immature. Most children nowadays want Playstation 3's and the new X-Box and they don't appreciate thoughtful gifts. I wouldn't worry too much about it but don't make that much of an effort in future.
It has to be the parent's fault, if they arn't thought it they won't teach it.
I will say thank you very much on beahlf of your ungrateful students!

This sort of thing must be so hurtful ! It seems to me that the parents must be as ill mannered as their offspring, just shrug it off. A merry Christmas and a happy New Year to you and yours!

I'm sorry that happened. I have a seven year old and I am always drilling into him "please , thank you, looking people in the eye, saying goodbye...etc." Other adults tell us how polite he is; this is just what I expect of him, but I think the problem is that the "cool kids" are aloof and kind of snotty acting. I guess that is the image on TV that is portrayed as cool; just watch any TV program with a kid in it and they are usually not polite and actually quite rude. If my son were in your class I would make sure he said (and wrote a little note at least!) Thank you!
