I'm taking a few friends for Xmas-holidays-thank you lunch. The restaurant policy adds a 20% gratuity to the food bill for a party over 8 persons ( # of people exceeds for my luncheon). Is it cusomary to tip additonally ?

The gratuity IS the tip.

If the gratuity is included in the check it is not required to tip additionally. However, if you receive extraordinary service, your server will appreciate it if you leave an extra tip. The extra tip amount is totally up to you.
Conversely, if you receive bad service there is nothing wrong with asking the manager to reduce or remove the required gratuity. If it is an establishment that takes pride in it's service this shouldn't be a problem. If it is, they don't deserve your custom.

It depends upon the level of service received from the servers. I can understand the policy of 20%, it covers gratuities lost serving other patrons.

Between 15% and 25% should be enough. And if you can't figure it out, your cell phone should have a tip calculator.

they include the gratuity just for this reason, so you do not have to "figure" what needs to be paid, and so they are sure the tip IS appropiate for the service. You need not pay any more. Enjoy.

not if the tip is included!
your cool that is the out the door cost!

Unless you want to do the math and see if they took 15% if so then leave the extra 5% on the table!

The tip has already been included.
I always think this is a cheek on the part of the restaurant because they automatically take for the tip before you even know if the service is any good! Don't tip them twice.

I wouldn't if it's already added in the bill. And if the service wasn't up to par, I'd be deducting that 20%. Now if the service was above and beyond, I'd add abit to it, but for just mediocre service, they should be happy with their included gratuity.

..............uhhh, I thought the 20% gratuity took care of the tip. But if your service is extra good, I think it would be nice to personally hand the server a tip.

No! If the tip is included in the bill - then no more money should be left.
