It didn't go anywhere. The new price of the table is $25.00. The clerk gave three men $1 each ($3 total) and kept $2, making it $5 on top of the $25 which they store owner kept, bringing the total to $30 ($25 +$5 = $30).

Don't add the $2 the clerk kept to $27, subtract it.. That leaves $25.00

25 + 2 (kept by clerk) + 3(dollar for each customer) = 30.

The question is worded incorrectly. The customers each paid 9 dollars, for a total of 27, but the owner only charged them $25. So why would you add the $2 the clerk kept to 27? That's where the question tries to trick you. The owner charged $25. The customers paid $27. The clerk pocketed the extra $2.

You are adding things up wrong.

Lets look at this carefully now.

Guys paid $30 - Total spent $30

Refund of $5 -Total spent $25, with a $5 refund; adds to $30

Clerk steals $2 - Total spent $25, with a $3 refund, with $2 stolen; adds to $30.

There is no missing dollar. The three men actually spent $27. That is the $25 + the $2 stolen. They end up with $3. That ends up to be $30. What you are doing is taking the stolen part and adding it twice. You are saying that they paid $25 + $2 + $2. However, it needs to be amount spend + change + amount stolen. $25 + $3 + $2.

I have heard that riddle once but it was about a hotel.

The dollar is still there, you just have to add differently... Don't add the $2 the clerk kept to $27, subtract it.. That leaves $25.00

25 + 2 (kept by clerk) + 3(dollar for each customer) = 30.

It was never there:

The table costs $25. (After rebate!)

The men pay $9 * 3 = $27.

The clerk pockest the difference $27 - $25 = $2
