I'm a Christian, but I know better than to think that Christians are the only ones with morals. Morals and religion are seperate... so why do we keep saying (in a nutshell), "You are a horrible, sinning piece of garbage if you don't believe?"

I don't want to be lumped into the "we" either... that's why I brought it up. I've seen it way too many times and I, myself, have been accused of more things (like this) than I care to discuss because of what others are saying.

"This is your way of thinking, which is why you are so well able to verbalize it."
This is... very clearly... not my way of thinking.
In hindsight, maybe I should have said "many Christians" imply this... not all. I do apologize, but if you're going to answer, please read the whole question and not just the top part. I am a Christian. I don't feel or think this way. That's why it bothers me so much when others do.

More importantly, why would we expect them to act like a Christian when they are not. We should expect Christians to act certain ways and hold them accountable not non-believers.

You seem like an intelligent, thoughtful girl. I don't know if reasonable people like yourself are the majority in Christianity, certainly not the most vocal, but for what it's worth I wish there were more christians that would ask these questions.
Unfortunately, I think there are a number of people who believe that religion, specifically christianity, and morality are synonymous, to the extent that if one isn't christian, one can't be moral. These are the people that come to the dubious conclusion that murder wouldn't be wrong if the bible didn't say so.

In a forum on religion and spirituality you have to expect to see the extremes of all beliefs. Unfortunately many Christians don't know how to share the Gospel in an appropriate way. That said, as a Christian we do also have to understand that being moral and having good character are not sufficient for salvation. The unfortunate truth is that many of us know some people who are awesome people, but without Christ they are hell-bound.
So, I hope none of my statements have sounded like I believe that Christians have cornered the market on goodness. I'm sure many of you can testify that some of the worst examples of how to play nice with others are people who claim to be Christian, but deny it by the life that they live.

Zero,
I do not believe nor imply this as true. I have a number of non-Christian friends who are very moral individuals. I also know several so-called Christians who are not very moral at all (sadly). According to Paul, "all have sinned and fall short of the glory of GOD". NONE are without sin! Have a great week.
Thanks,
Eds
EDIT:
Paradox,
If that was the case, Christians would be told to go out and kill rather than to reach and teach others as Christ said to do in Matthew 28:18-20 (The Great Commission).

I don't! But then I was raised to NOT believe in Christianity and came into it kind of late, so my point of view is a bit different from most.
It may be the sin of Pride talking, but I think maybe the way I came into it is a bit better, you don't grow up viewing non-believers as something alien, or outside yourself. Being raised being told you're already saved, and thus better than everyone else... maybe that's where the problem starts?

I agree with you 100%. However, this quote in a nutshell:
You are a horrible, sinning piece of garbage if you don't believe?"
Is something I have never seen, felt, nor insinuated the entire time I have been a Christian. Who believes that? Hopefully no one! Gods Peace to you :)

I am a horrible , sinning piece of garbage and I believe!!!!
The only difference between me and the guy across the street is that I believe and have been saved by that belief.
My salvation did not remove thoughts of fleshly lust or desire for things not good for me. IT did give me insight to the fact that I will never be good enough on my own and that I need the Messiah, Jesus Christ to pay that sin debt for me.
My sister in laws father was a wonderful man, taught my sons how to hunt, upstanding man who would give you the shirt off his back. He died unsaved by his own words. He just did not think that as a good man he had anything to be sorry for and did not need forgiveness from anyone.
I loved him dearly, but the bible states that I will not see him in heaven. Such a pity, he had it all down pat , except for the fact that he had a creator who told him that he needed to be forgiven and he rejected his fathers request.

I don't make that accusation. It is not necessary to be Christian in order to have the morals considered good in this world. However, the most important morals are to be observed for the coming world, after our short lives here are spent. This requires belief in God and Christ.

WE don't all do that! You are not the only one who knows that we are not to Judge! I have never told anyone that they were a piece of garbage ever! I have never told anyone that they were going to Hell ever! I am intelligent enough to know that all people can be capable of moral behavior! I have never heard a 'True Christian' any of that stuff!

I am a Christian and I don't say that. I do know that there are many very good people that are not Christian. Some that people say they are Christian but are not.
the thing is that Jesus Him self said that there will be some that do good things in his name but that doesn't make them His
I think that His words were if I never knew you I will spit you out of my mouth(we can say that we know and love Jesus but does he know us?). The Bible also says that being a good person is not enough.
so yes I do believe that you do not have to be a Christian to be a good person but you do have to be a Christian to be a good Christian.

"We" don't. I don't. So I guess I'm not part of "we". I too am a horrible sinner, saved by grace, so I would never dare to say that to someone. Some might, but not I. Anyone who would call someone else a "horrible sinning piece of garbage" is a hypocrite if they dare to call themselves a child of the King.
