No you are not supposed to. Would it drastically affect the flight? Probably not. HOWEVER... The issue is that all electronic equipment gives off some amount of RF energy. Not enough to harm a human, but perhaps the EMI (Electro-magnetic interference) could be picked up by wires and be picked up and detected as if it were a piece of legitimate equipment on the aircraft. So perhaps the radar altimeter might be off by 100 feet. This could truly suck on a marginal approach.
I have seen this phenomena on ground equipment before.
Since there is no way to test all possible appliances in all possible scenarios in all possible locations the decision is made to ensure everything is off.

NO NO NOOOO
Until recently I used to think it's just a show-off by the flight crew. I used to turn on my camcoder and digital camera, to capture the fall colors and other stuff. But a recent incident during my flight made me believe that its not a showoff.
I was on my flight to Las Vegas and about 20 minutes before landing a man died on the plane. By using a defibrillator they bought the man alive by giving shock and stuff and he died again after 5 minutes, they did the same thing again and he was alive again. He breathing was still hard and we had our fingers crossed to see him not die one more time. But the crew said they have to switch OFF the defibrillator, because the flight is gonna land. That's when i realized that turning on Electronic devices is not just a showoff, even though it's a life saving device. Some how we got a priority landing and the guy was alive until he boarded off the plane. Wish he's alive now.
From then on I never turned on my electronic devices after they made the announcement.

YOu are NOT suppose to have electronic equipments running but those flight attendants are not the brightest bulbs on the christmas tree.
So I have a feeling that they won't know that a camcorder is an electronic equipment that might interfere with communication.
Besides once everybody sits down and seat belted, not even the flight attendants are going to get up to tell you to turn your camcorder off.

But during - yes perfectely allowed.
Good Luck.
P.S. During? Are you planning to join the mile high club?

You are asked to turn off ALL electronic devices during those phases of the flight. To Helper........I can't believe the absurd comment you made about Flight Attendants. They are highly trained professionals and I have a high regard for the professionalism they have. I would expect you are one of the passengers they have problems with because of your attitude.

NO!
You are supposed to "secure all loose articles..."......that way if the plane crashes or even bumps, the video camera wont come flying out of your hand and whack someone.

ninety 9% of "incidents" ensue at landing or take-off, so they do no longer % issues unfastened in the cabin that would fly around. additionally they % the passengers waiting to evacuate devoid of postpone devoid of having to disentangle digital camera straps &c.
